Thanks, Jay. I should have been more specific and said in terms of number of completed wells drilled. I knew the surface area is bigger, think I remember it's slightly shallower, too. I've kept up a little with the enviro/NIMBY issues, but had seen an op-ed piece by former Gov. Pataki advocating a pro-drilling stance.

Didn't know their EUR's are about half. Learn something new every day.

Sesport, it is virtually impossible to track the number of well permits and units for the Marcellus Shale as neither Pennsylvania or West Virginia provide much publicly available data.

The Marcellus Shale stretches over a very large area and is primarily located in three states. The rock quality, gas quality (lean-vs-rich) and formation depth vary significantly over the play so operators are still attempting to delineate which areas will actually be commercial.

Some initial information is as follows:
Well EUR's - 2.5 to 4.4 Bcf/well
Well Cost - $3.0 to $4.5MM/well
Gas In Place - 50 to 150 Bcf/Section
Formation Net Thickness - 50 to 200 ft

The top 14 operators have 5.3 million net acres under lease

The Appalachian Basin rig count is ~ 100 drilling but it is unclear how many are drilling Marcellus Shale wells.
