Land Borders National Forest

We have 350 acres that borders a National Wildlife Management Wilderness Area. We hope to lease our mineral rights. I was wondering if there would possibly be any problems leasing our mineral rights since we border the National Forest?

Assuming that you own the mineral rights, there would be no reason why you can't lease. You may have a problem though, if you own say 10 acres and the government owns the other 630 acres and is not leasing. I assume that your land is near the Kisatchie National Forest. I believe Jimmy Carter severely limited some portions of the forest for development. I believe that in some portions motor vehicles, etc are banned. The upshot is if that area can't be leased and drilled on, it would probably hurt your chances to lease. If the government will lease or has already leased, then you have a better chance.

Kisatchie is a large National Forest covering several parishes. The portion that was indicated that I indicated that had restrictions was in Natchitoches Parish. Based upon my recollection from working in that area in the early 1980's, President Carter had designated a portion of it to be restricted to hiking and possibly bicycles. No motorized vehicles were allowed. This area that I assumed waggoner N5T6R6 was questioning based upon his ID. Unless this area has been removed from the Executive Order, I would doubt it would be available for lease, since you could not develop it. At the time I was working down there,we did not believe that it could be lease.

Jim Krow- I am referring to Kisatchie Red Dirt Wilderness Area. This area is restricted and no vehicles are allowed.

my land is very close to the KNF in Natchitoches Parish specifically, 12N R6W. For anyone out there that is familiar with my area and it's location to the KNF. Would my family land be barred from leasing?

Jim, can i assume since chespeake did get a permit to do seismic on my property that my land by the KNF would be lease permitted?

Jim, sorry for not reading your above comment but my land is not under a lease nor has it ever been leased. I own 100% of the minerals but my worry is how close in proximity my land is to the KNF and if i would be prohibited from leasing, if you knew at all. Presently, they are finishing up a huge seismic test in my area. I signed a contract back last october to do this. I'm assuming and we both know that could be a bad thing but why would they spend the money to do seismic on my property if a year or three years down the road they would be able to lease my area? I didnt' know if you had any information of my area in 12N 6W that would prohibit such leasing.

I think Natch N3 and I are discussing 2 different issues. Natch N3 is concerned about leasing problems because of bordering a National Forest. I am concerned about leasing problems because we border a National Forest Wilderness Area.

Hi Natch,
I lived in Jena for two years. The best part of it was driving thru the Kisatchie going home to Bossier. It is a beautiful forest. It's so rural that Big Foot his wife and kids and his inlaws all could live there and you still couldn't find them.
