After years of steadily rising prices, “low-cost fuel” may seem like an oxymoron.

But thanks to a steady surge in domestic oil and gas production, energy experts say consumers could enjoy inexpensive gasoline and natural gas for years to come.

MAP MASTER“The outlook is for a low-cost energy economy in the U.S.,” said Daniel Fine, associate director of the New Mexico Center for Energy Policy, which is run by the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology in Socorro. “This is a long-term trend, not an isolated event, and it’s something almost revolutionary.”

The country’s newfound oil and gas boom, made possible by modern drilling technologies, has helped keep gasoline prices well below the $4-per-gallon peaks that consumers faced just a few years ago. It’s also driven home-heating bills to record lows since 2009.

Now, with production still climbing fast, Fine and others say natural-gas prices will remain moderately low for another five to 10 years at least. And gasoline prices likely will continue to fall into 2014, before stabilizing at somewhere above $2 per gallon for the foreseeable future.

“I believe gasoline will reach $2.35 a gallon or less quite soon, within a year at most,” Fine said.

Gregg Laskoski, a senior policy analyst with the online price-tracking service Gas Buddy, agreed.

“That may seem shocking, but it’s not as outlandish as it sounds,” he said. “The potential is certainly there.”

FARMINGTON – The San Juan Basin could be headed toward a renaissance in natural-gas and oil drilling if rosy expectations touted by industry officials at Monday’s San Juan Basin Energy Conference hold true.

“In the southern part of the basin, the Mancos play has the potential to revitalize declining San Juan Basin oil production and also has a tremendous amount of future gas production in the northern part of the basin,” said Ron Broadhead, a principal petroleum geologist with the New Mexico Bureau of Geology and Mineral Resources.

The conference, which drew about 500 attendees from across the nation to San Juan College, was the first to have a dedicated focus on the Mancos Shale, which stretches across the northwestern part of New Mexico and into southwestern Colorado.

After years of declining production in the San Juan Basin, companies are eyeing the shale play for both natural-gas and oil potential because of advances in hydraulic fracturing and horizontal drilling technologies that have helped operators unlock shale gas and oil across the nation.

“It’s reasonable that the Mancos Shale could be a really, really good shale play in the San Juan Basin,” said Darryl Williams, the vice president of subsurface for BP North America Gas Exploration and Production Co.

Other presenters were more direct.

“I’m bullish on the Mancos, we’ve already seen a number of wells drilled that are economic,” said T. Greg Merrion, president of Merrion Oil and Gas. “I’m looking forward to this next boom.”

With natural-gas prices hanging around $4 per thousand cubic feet, many conference speakers focused on the oil-producing window of the shale play located in the southern San Juan Basin.

The play has been estimated to contain up to 60 billion barrels of oil, about 10 percent of which is expected to be recoverable, according to estimates by Encana and Daniel Fine, a senior energy analyst with the New Mexico Center for Energy Policy.

The possibility of a resurgence had some speakers proclaiming the beginning of a new era of economic prosperity for northwest New Mexico.

“These are happy times again,” former U.S. Senator Pete Domenici said. Inc., a subsidiary of Encana Corporation (TSX, NYSE: ECA), today opened its first natural gas fueling station. The Red River station will fuel the company's growing fleet of compressed natural gas (CNG) vehicles, which is part of Encana's commitment to expand the use of cleaner-burning natural gas as a transportation fuel in North America.

"We are very excited about the opportunity to bring this natural gas fueling station to Coushatta in Red River Parish. This first station is our inaugural piece of natural gas fueling infrastructure. It represents the first step in our multi-year plan to convert a large number of the more than 1,300 trucks and passenger vehicles in Encana's fleet to run on natural gas," said Eric Marsh, Encana's Executive Vice-President, Natural Gas Economy.

"Due to sweeping technological breakthroughs in the development of natural gas in North America, cleaner-burning natural gas provides an abundant, affordable alternative to conventional gasoline, and at a cost that is 20 to 40 percent lower in many regions. Carbon dioxide emissions from CNG vehicles are about 20 to 30 percent lower than from vehicles running on gasoline and natural gas doesn't contribute significantly to creating smog because it emits very low levels of nitrogen oxides and particulates. Natural gas vehicles have become one of the fastest growing sectors in the alternative vehicle market worldwide. We believe this trend will continue. This station, therefore,
represents far more than a fueling facility - it is one milestone along a road to a cleaner energy future, a building block in the infrastructure of a growing natural gas highway network," Marsh said.

The Coushatta fueling station will dispense compressed natural gas to Encana's fleet of vehicles in the Red River Parish area. Starting next year, Encana Natural Gas expects to be able to offer the station's fueling service to other corporate fleets in the region. Also, in early 2011 Encana plans to open its next four natural gas fueling stations, one in each of the states of Wyoming and Colorado and two in Western Canada.

"Converting our fleet to natural gas will provide a significant cost savings over the life of the vehicles. This cost advantage, combined with the significant environmental benefits, provides a compelling case for Encana to build a fueling infrastructure," said Paul Sander, Encana's Vice-President, Mid-Continent Business Unit.

Natural gas powered cars and trucks are fueled with CNG or liquefied natural gas (LNG) and operate similarly to gasoline-powered vehicles. There are currently more than 900 natural gas vehicle fueling stations in the United States fueling about 110,000 natural gas vehicles.

"While there are tremendous environmental and public health benefits to converting many more cars and light duty trucks to natural gas, even more so, converting freight trucks and commercial vehicles would have an immediate impact on reducing carbon emissions. For instance, converting one 18-wheeler from diesel to LNG is equivalent to removing the emissions of about 325 cars from the road. Expanding the use of natural gas in transportation will also generate more employment opportunities and government revenues," Marsh said.

"As a nation we're making progress towards alternative domestic energy options and the State of Louisiana should feel proud to be part of these encouraging developments. In the past year Louisiana has enacted legislation providing some of the most attractive natural gas vehicle and infrastructure incentives in the U.S. We are committed to supporting natural gas as a clean, affordable Louisiana-produced transportation fuel," said State Senator Gerald Long.
Postmark 3 days late to exercise extension rightstag:gohaynesvilleshale.com,2010-08-21:2117179:Topic:15240622010-08-21T21:28:53.823ZThomas Teekellhttps://gohaynesvilleshale.com/profile/ThomasTeekell
So, I got a letter in the mail from Encana postmarked Aug. 18, 2010 with a check to exercise their two-year extension right on a five acre piece of property and a two-acred piece in Township 17 range 12 west, Sections 19 and 30. The check was dated Aug. 13 and the lease expired on Aug. 15. Going by the postmark, they missed the deadline. Three years ago we signed with $200 an acre bonus and 25% royalty with $50 an acre to extend.
Why would the sale price for gas from Encana & Shell differ? It is the same gas from the same well. But these 2 companies that share the stake in the well are giving me royalty payments at different prices.
