Australis Oil & Gas is drilling a well in Amite county, does anyone know anything about the target formation? I know they are currently drilling the lateral section at approximately 16800 feet MD. So I'm assuming its either TMS or AC.

GHS Publisher, Keith Mauck, and I recently attended a conference in Washington regarding the future of Shale Development. There were many industry, government and NGO players at this two-day conference. It caught my attention that some of those players see a potential for radical improvements in the efficiency of gas extraction from shale. Currently, they say drilling is about playing the statistical probabilities--you’ll have to drill many duds to find the ones that pay off big. Nothing new there. The USGS reported that the Maximum EUR from the Haynesville is 2 orders of magnitude greater than the minimum EUR. What if it weren't a crap shot?

What fascinated me as a non-technical layman is that some of those present, including a scientist from Lawrence Livermore National Labs (LLNL), seem to believe we will one day be able to scientifically identify the optimal locations for well placement and how best to drain an entire formation. What a huge impact it would make in so many ways if only half the wells were needed to extract the same amount of energy. The entire industry dynamics could change. A rep from Lawrence Livermore described the process necessary to arrive at that—High Performance Computers, like those at LLNL, would need to create 3D models of the entire formation using seismic and micro-seismic data. The optimal solutions could then be derived, and, in a sense, drive the bits exactly on the most productive faults in the richest areas. I don’t know how far off that future might be, but I got the impression it was a matter of time. Given how quickly shale technology has moved perhaps that’s sooner rather than later.

FRISCO, Texas, March 24, 2010 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- Comstock Resources, Inc. ("Comstock" or the "Company") (NYSE: CRK) today announced that the first well drilled in its South Toledo Bend field in Sabine Parish in Northern Louisiana was successful. The Sustainable Forest 3#1H was drilled to a vertical depth of 12,360 feet with a 4,160 foot horizontal lateral. The horizontal lateral was drilled in the upper section of the Haynesville shale or Bossier shale and the well was completed with 16 frac stages. Comstock tested this well at an initial 24 hour production rate which averaged 20 MMcfe per day at a flowing tubing pressure of 7,800 psi. Comstock has a 67% working interest in this well.

The Sustainable Forest 3#1H well is Comstock's second horizontal well drilled to test the Upper Haynesville interval also referred to as the Bossier shale. In 2010 the Company expects to drill 56 (41.1 net) horizontal wells in its Haynesville shale program. Approximately fifteen of these wells will target the Upper Haynesville shale. This well is also the first Haynesville shale well drilled by the Company in Sabine Parish where Comstock has 22,404 gross acres (17,561 net acres) that are prospective for development. Six of the planned 56 Haynesville shale wells that will be drilled this year are expected to be in the South Toledo Bend field.

I was curious if anyone knew what was going on with this Petrohawk well. It showed being permitted in July, but no new information is posted. A family member has a small interest. Thanks
