Early reports regarding the Biden infrastructure bill are signaling big investments in hydrogen. Blue hydrogen, then green hydrogen. The analogy I heard used in a webinar on the subject today was fracking. The presenter was referring to the government investments and assistance to private efforts to make the technology work. Many thought that horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracture stimulation was pie in the sky thinking back then. Hydrogen is basically at the same point today that fracking technology was in the middle 1990's.

For every two times the word, hydrogen, was used the words, natural gas, were used once. It was referred to throughout the presentations. Not just the use of methane molecules for energy but the pipelines, the associated infrastructure and underground storage. The cost estimates to harden the pipeline and facility infrastructure was said to considerably cheaper than stringing electric lines. Those lines are vulnerable to fires and storms and much of the extreme weather that is expected with climate change. Pipeline infrastructure is largely underground and does not share those vulnerabilities. Hydrogen can not be transported through pipelines owing to its low density. So to move it a mix of 5% hydrogen and 95% natural gas would be required. To make hydrogen work, investments in natural gas are required at least in the nascent phases of deployment. If the presenters were accurate in their reporting/analysis, there may be a lot to like regarding natural gas once the details of the proposed bill are made public.

Clean Coal was never about carbon emissions. It was the use of technologies to drastically reduce the levels of nitrous and sulphurous oxides from coal-fired generating plants to eliminate "acid rain" that resulted when those oxides mixed with moisture in rain clouds. Clean coal scrubbers and other technologies basically worked and eliminated acid rain in the US and Canada.

Clean Coal is an oxymoron. And never had any real science behind what was a political talking point. The Clean Power Plan was the opportunity for natural gas to displace coal on an expedited timeline. A missed opportunity. The Democratic infrastructure bill is said to have some elements that are beneficial for natural gas but the industry will have to get serious about all the infrastructure that leaks along with some commitments to Carbon Capture and Sequestration (CCS). The Democratic infrastructure bill is said to have some elements that are beneficial for natural gas but the industry will have to get serious about all the infrastructure that leaks along with some commitments to Carbon Capture and Sequestration (CCS). It might happen. How many thought that the industry and their political proxies would get behind a carbon tax? The times they are a changing.

With all that is at stake, you would think that the natural gas industry would come together (with big money) to research or facilitate research into how to 'save' natural gas. The amount of sunk costs invested into the infrastructure is staggering. I read about some new idea to clean up coal in a big way several years ago and I haven't heard anything about it since; I guess it died.
