North LA Cotton Valley Combo Play

This play will primarily be explored in Jackson and Lincoln parishes. And to a lesser extent, Claiborne and Bienville.

These wells are producing from a combination of multiple Cotton Valley Sand intervals or a combination of Cotton Valley Sands and adjacent sands of the Hosston formation (w/ Upper CV Sands) and Bossier, Haynesville or Gray Sand formations (w/ Lower CV Sands).

Thanks for the new group, Keith.  And congratulations to members with mineral interests in the Play area.  In a period of few positive developments regarding the O&G industry the N-LA CV Combo Play stands out as example of what may be the next wave of major producing area that are not unconventional, not shale.  The tight, liquid rich Cotton Valley Sands and the intervals that straddle the sequence in the stratagraphic column  will not cover as large a continuous area as the Haynesville Shale for example but can produce really astounding results by using the latest technology and well designs from the unconventional plays.

Odd name for the group but following. :)
  • Skip Peel - Mineral Consultant

Chester, the group name reflects the fact that the bulk of Terryville Complex wells (especially those permitted, drilled and/or completed in the last year) are not producing from a single zone or formation.  If you review the True Vertical Depth (TVD) for the groups of alternate wells you will find that they stimulate a large volume of rock spread over a group of adjacent named formations.  There are at least three groups of sands that are the predominate targets.  All are combinations of intervals, thus the name "Combo".

If anyone is interested, this USGS report on the Cotton Valley formation is an in depth study. It is in PDF format and a large file but hopefully it may be viewed.69_E_CH_2.pdf

Skip, I know what you are saying, I've just never heard the play called that before. Do you think any companies besides mrd/wh2 and to a lesser extent nadel&guss will enter the play?
  • Skip Peel - Mineral Consultant

Chester, I made up the name to help describe why it is so prolific.  I think we will find that WRM/wh2 is no longer a player.  I think much of the new acreage MRD acquired came from them.  There is an MRD corporate presentation on the 28th. that should address that question.  Keep in mind that this is a conventional reservoir play and not an unconventional one.  The question, yet unanswered is, how big is the productive area?  In a shale play the area is so large that there is room for multiple operators to establish a land position.  300,000 acres is good size but nothing like the Haynesville Shale which covers approximately 2.5 million.  I'd like to see more players and greater competition but I just don't see that happening.

Thanks for setting up this new group!

Thank you for the new Group. Very good news. I hope it comes to Webster Parish
  • Max

The MRD folks I've dealt with have all been upfront and honest.  My opinion is that they care about the land owners and understand the value of trust.

  • Fred Baragona

    Agreed.

    Hello-

I don't live in Lincoln Parish any longer but own property there.  I hear that the road to the new location in Section 9 off of Mitcham Orchard Road has been staked out.  Any other news?

    SPL

  • Gary Rainey

spl there are two 8 acre locations staked in Section 9, but neither have been constructed yet. But I believe there will be some construction in the next very few months. Just my guess.

  • spl

Thanks Gary.  I know the Mitcham property has been acquired, where is the other?

Is there any other companies besides MRD working in NLA?

Is there a map showing all the sections/townships in NLA?

    Thanks.

  • Skip Peel - Mineral Consultant

Too broad a question as there are a number of companies "working" in NLA drilling a number of different formations/zones.  You can certainly get an answer by limiting your question to one or more specific parishes.  If you want a map of the entire state that has section-township-range you can find a copy of Mapsco's The Roads Of Louisiana;  Updated and Improved - $19.95.  That's the main map I use.  However if you are interested in a map for a specific parish that includes s-t-r you can download one online by the DOTD.

    Specific Jackson Parish.

I haven't heard anything regarding recent leasing.  Much of the leasing has slowed significantly or ceased owing to the impending merger between MRD and Range Resources.  If you are interested in what companies have leased and where you can find those leases filed of record at the Clerk of Court's record room.  Here is a link to the DOTD map of Jackson Parish with sections.

Skip, sad to say but the last time I looked for a Roads of Louisiana map book, they were out of production. The folks selling new condition books wanted several hundred bucks for a copy.

  • Skip Peel - Mineral Consultant

Ouch.  Several hundred bucks!  Thank goodness the DOTD maps are free and should serve just fine for the majority of GHS members.

    Appreciate the info.

Has anyone heard about Grenadier oil exploration, can't seem to get in touch with them? Thanks Eva Martinez
