This article came out I believe in 1995. It explains alot and how the formations were named and the potential for oil and gas. This has helped me understand alot more than what I could get from the media. It was put together by many people in the oil and gas field. I hope this helps you like it has helped me understand.
I talked to my mother who is almost 80 years-old and she explained as much as she could remember. She said Ben Goodwin married my grandfather's sister. His name was Luther Teague. My mother's family (Driver) were share croppers for Ben Goodwin. I still remember my aunt taking me to visit two older ladies named Ruth and Grace who were sisters of Joe Odom. My mother also knew your mother growing up around Haynesville. Her best memory of Goodwin lake was that there was a small original lake to the right where the boat dock was. She said her family moved to Athens and came back when she was about 8 years old and my great-grandfather said he dug the bigger lake with a steam-shovel and dynamite. It's funny how that story has been around ever since I remember. Regardless, it's amazing to meet someone on this site that shares this history. I sincerely hope all of us around Haynesville and in Claiborne Parish have good luck with this new discovery and come out with a good deal on our mineral rights.
I agree it is amazing. I believe Ben Goodwin was my Great grandfathers brother. My granfather married Mucie Dora Traylor. Ruth & Grace were my mother's aunts, very sweet ladies. We now own that little home site on 79 (all grown over now) and 316 acres along Goodwin lake road. We no longer own the lake my grandmother lost that part of the land in a divorce. We are probably related distantly. What is you mothers name. I also wish for good things in the future for our lands. My mother always said never sell the land, it will take care of you. Jon
