I've tried to read as much as I can about what should and shouldn't go into a lease. Is there a copy of an actual lease posted anywhere here? Maybe even a made-up ideal lease? My original one is the old standard one from years ago ~ fortunately it expired before things got serious.

jack Blake is curious. From when you were approached about row deal until you got your check was about how long?
It took Jack about 3 months.
Jack,
I have not even signed yet. I hope to sign this week -- we need to discuss a few items in the Exhibit A and work out a solution. I'll let you know when I get paid.
Here are a few good links with some info to school yourself up on.

These should at least get you started in the right direction. I do, however, whole-heartedly recommend that prior to signing any new lease that you do have the document looked over by a good O&G attorney.

You dodged a bullet in that your acreage never did get HBP'd under the terms of your old standard form lease, so you have the chance now to get it all right the second time!
