John Rowe: "The transition to a clean-energy economy will be fueled by natural gas "

From the American Enterprise Institute.

Market-driven natural gas plants can increase US energy security, create jobs, and address the risk of climate change, John Rowe said Tuesday to a packed audience at the American Enterprise Institute. Rowe, the chairman and CEO of Exelon, one of the largest electric and gas utility companies in the United States, stated that climate change was a real threat and emphasized the need to move to clean energy, but he pointed out the burden that legislation can impose on consumers, taxpayers, and the federal budget. The self-described "most consistently pro-market CEO in the electric utility industry" argued that Congress and the Obama administration should not interfere in the transition to a clean-energy future. Rowe argued that instead of imposing more expensive mandates and subsidies, Congress should allow energy markets to continue this transition, as well as allow the Environmental Protection Agency to do its job and enforce the Clean Air Act rules. "These rules are market intrusions," Rowe admitted, "but they internalize some increasingly nasty externalities." He argued that the transition to a clean-energy economy will be fueled by natural gas, "a genuine elixir that will deliver the cleaner energy we need to compete in the world."
