Thank you for the warm welcome! I have enjoyed reading the shale discussions and knew right away that I wanted to join the group. As a landowner, of course I am eager to find out what possibilities lie ahead, but I unexpectedly found out that I have a thirst for knowledge regarding the technical side of things. Thank you for the opportunity to pick the brains of so many educated individuals. I apologize in advance as I am quite sure that my initial questions may seem redundant and my terminology a little off but I am a work in progress. I get the feeling from what I have read so far that all you kind people here are both compassionate and understanding. Ok, here goes! I have some questions regarding the difference between Austin Chalk and Tuscaloosa Marine Shale. I believe I have a vague idea but want to make sure I am not misinformed. Secondly, someone came to my home and wanted me to sign to have a seismic survey done on my property(which I did sign). He said they would be out in 2 weeks. It's been 31/2 and nothing yet. I called the company and was told that it would be about a month and it will encompass 75 square miles. He said that he expects leasing to start very soon after the survey is complete. I was aslo told that the company ordering the survey is Highland Texas Energy. I live in Livingston Parish, Louisiana. I heard a lot about the TMS in Tangipahoa but I appear to be a little south of this play. I did some investigating and found out that this entire area was tested in the 1970's and a few test wells were less than successful. I am wondering if there is something here other than TMS or could I actually be part of it. I own 10 acres in S38 T6S R6E. I would appreciate any info I can get. Thank you very much(and I promise I won't be so long winded in the future).

Hi Ilona,

My guess is that this is going to be an Austin Chalk play. You appear to be South of the reef and the chalk should be +/- 1,000 ft thick. There was Chalk production from vertical wells in the 70's South of I-12 in Livingston Parish. I don't know what the production history was for those wells. I hope this helps.

Hi, Joe. Thanks for your input. Is there an advantage or disadvantage to chalk as opposed to just tms? It appears (from what little I know) that this is a good thing. I live just north of I-12(just a few hundred feet north of it).
