If you want to make sure that natural gas has a place in our energy future then here is your best chance right now ... and it ends Tuesday at Midnight. You can be sure that those opposed to natural gas have their fingers on the keyboards ...
.
NY State is asking for public comments. Usually I would not comment on another state's legislation, HOWEVER they have gotten 18 THOUSAND (18,000) comments from all over the US. The bad news is that the negative comments are running 10-1 against natural gas. They are allowing comments into the record from all over the US not just NY State.
.
You can submit your letter through this pro-natgas site sponsored by the Petroleum Institute. Their page is below and they have sample letters online. If you were ever interested in promoting natural gas this is your best chance for a long time. New York is a bellweather state and it's rules will be copied by many other states.
.
Do it today. The deadline is midnight Tuesday (possibly Midnight Wends, but I have seen these public comment periods cut off earlier for out of staters, so send your email to them NOW.) Here is the Energy Citizens site to send a PRO nat gas email to NY State. Personal emails count more, but volume counts too.
.
.
Here is the Ithica NY newspaper that carried the article about the 10,000 comments running 10-1 against us. Don't waste time making comments on the newspaper's site - go to energycitizens.org or the dept of ny state's environmental quality. New York is too important! Their laws will set the tone for other states.

. Here are a couple of paragraphs from the Ithica Journal ...
"The vast majority of comments were submitted electronically or mailed to the DEC's Albany office. Some were written by individuals acting on their own, others were part of letter-writing campaigns organized by advocacy groups in all regions of the state.
.
Energy Citizens, a group funded by the American Petroleum Institute, generated hundreds of responses through its website. The group mailed a form letter to the DEC on someone's behalf when that person provided his or her name and address on the Energy Citizens website.
.
One group, Brooklyn-based Frack Action, even held a handful of comment-writing parties in various parts of the state, gathering people together to jot down their concerns and mailing them en masse.

Well, I must admit that's a smart legal strategy. It creates an easy way for legislators to get out of their statewide responsibilities by claiming to "let the local people decide". The legislator's mail is running 10-1 against natgas according to the Ithica newspaper. While many of those emails are from out of state, the environmentalists have done their homework in getting people to contact their legislator.

The Home Rule argument does have merit. But, this is very complex science and local communities will be swayed by door to door advocates. I think statewide regulation is far preferable to regulations by every small township and community. The Home Rule law could bring a lot of natgas drilling to a screeching halt and tie it up in a maze of local land use laws. However, I can also see the value in local citizens involvement as they know the land best. Let's not kid ourselves, there are places where we should not put a deep fracking well. Because of faults, water, history or whatever there are some places which should be off the map for drilling. (paragraph intentionally underlined for emphasis)

Thanks for posting this. It does add a new twist to the legislative efforts. The mostly out of state gas companies will be competing in local town halls against local university scientists and local county dept of Environmental Quality folks. That's a lot of folks that O&G lobbyists do not know and the local advocates against natgas do know and work with every day.
.
The natgas industry will simply have to work harder to earn local folk's trust - and go after the BEST properties first and "prove" the technology to local people. They should go after the very safest environmentally leases that offer a profitable return. The industry cannot afford a bad accident in NY or Penn state - they will be under the microscope in those states.

We may need a miracle ... I wonder how Tim Tebow feels about Natural Gas??? (joke)
Shale drilling and lithium extraction are seemingly distinct activities, but there is a growing connection between the two as the world moves towards cleaner energy solutions. While shale drilling primarily targets…

AboutAs exciting as this is, we know that we have a responsibility to do this thing correctly. After all, we want the farm to remain a place where the family can gather for another 80 years and beyond. This site was born out of these desires. Before we started this site, googling "shale' brought up little information. Certainly nothing that was useful as we negotiated a lease. Read More |
