I would have some concern with O & G companies that have their primary interest in crude oil....and especially when most of it comes from OPEC. They could be more interested in keeping natural gas interests on the back burner....so to speak.

More than 200 years ago, brave men died to free this country from the British rule. I would hate to think that they may once again get their hands around our necks! Who would be the lesser of two evils? Only time will tell.

I would much prefer to have Chesapeake keep Chesapeake and prosper....producing USA natural gas and spreading their prosperity within THIS COUNTRY.
Will we never learn? If Exxon buys Chesapeake, they could decide to minimize production for decades until they no longer have so much invested in other crude oil in foreign courtries. If BP buys Chesapeake, same senerio plus all their prosperity goes to their own country.
Here we have the solution to our national economic problems right under our feet. I hope Chesapeake will hold on and STAY AMERICAN !

Never apologize for being passionate about your beliefs. I tend to agree with you. I would hate to think that our future will be in the hands of Exxon who have so much invested in other countries. BP will send the profits to England. Chesapeake is at least an American company and keeps the money here at home.

Well I signed with Chesapeake!!! I was all for them to sale to the British!!! My wife is British!!! But, after what I read there is no way I don't want them to sale to no 1!!! Hold thier own!!! Keep America relying on thier own resources!!! USA USA USA!!! Rely own our own!!! Stop depending on someone else!!!

Cathaus: you do realize that BP is currently the #3 gas producer in the U.S., right? Behind CHK and COP.

And LP, both XOM and BP have very very large percentages of their production, reserves and net income/cashflow in natural gas. To say that they have "primary interest in crude oil" is very very inaccurate.

Don't forget that both of these companies and other supermajors still have significant under developed acreage holdings in the Ark-La-Tex area.

Any company that invest in the local economy is going to be a plus.

That said if I had to pick I'd wish for XOM, but if one actually does make a run for CHK, I bet it's BP.

I still think a lot of this is pure rumor for sake of some Wall Street trader.

I would prefer Exxon because they are a U.S. company. But I would be concerned that either might put Haynesville on a deferred schedule to benefit their oil interests.

Exxon is semi-US. Much of it is owned by Saudi Arabia and various oil Sheiks. Exxon could give a rats rear about Louisiana economy and these big oil companies have killed prosperity here before. Remember the boom of the 1980's ? They went to foreign oil rather than producing it here.
Exxon is too big to care about anything but the bottom line.

They went to foreign oil because it was cheaper to produce. The federal government encouraged this move to keep fuel prices low.

Big oil companies are really Big Oil AND Gas companies. Your thought that they wouldn't care about gas because they are too worried about oil doesn't hold water. They are interested in making money and natural gas makes a huge percentage of their profits. Its cheaper to produce, has less environmental risks and tends be something that is found in larger and larger quantities here in the US.

While BP is an English company, they are traded on the NYSE have more American employees than British. And they are already a major player in the onshore US market.

I'll be waiting for those references and links that show XOM owned by the Saudi's!
