The wells are getting better and better in South Caddo Parish. I don't believe I've yet seen a well IP over 20 MMCFD in that area and Sec. 20-16-14 was pretty darn close.
tony, the upper perforations are definitely CV. The lower perforations are a little deep by my opinion but still likely Lower Cotton Valley. The produced water is consistent with CV production. There is no Haynesville Shale this far east as far as the data I have reviewed.
Skip, it looks like it could be a horizontal to me.
You guys are correct. The TVD seems to be consistent with the other CV completions in the immediate area. There have been a number of horizontal CV completions by various operators reported this year. If you search SONRIS Lite by organization, you will find that Questar (QEP) and EXCO both have some. I am not familiar with the development activity this far east however as several members, including Spring Branch, have mentioned in the past, the next big play was going to be horizontal CV drilling before the Haynesville
Shale interrupted it.
Has there been enough CV horizonal completions to know what decline rates to expect? Anyway I would take one!
I haven't seen any corporate operating reports that give any specifics for CV horizontal completions but I expect that some operators will focus their development in that direction. Indigo for one probably has a lot of potential locations. I suspect that a large percentage of those locations are HBP and the pace of development will be based on gas prices. So it may be slow for a few years.
If this is a cv horizontal well producing 14461 mcf in this area this is great news. Since the cv is a shallower formation and I would assume sand would be easier to drill than shale does anyone have and idea of the cost of a cv horizontal well and the time from spud to completion? Sand wells generally produce for a very long time, would it be possible for these horizontal sand wells to produce more gas over time than the shale wells with steeper declines? It seems the cv sand is in much of northwest louisiana. Petrohawk my regret selling their interest north of Ruston. Seems like the cv horizontals may be the next new thing.
Horseman, this is no regular CV well. In areas where the CV is "tight" (low permeability) horizontal wells can be quite productive. In areas where the formation is not tight, it is less expensive and more efficient to produce the CV with vertical wells. In other words, a horizontal well is no magic bullet that is applicable anywhere. And the CV is not continuously productive over a large aerial extent quite like the shale. As mentioned above, the drilling of horizontal CV wells was set to commence before the HS appeared on the radar screen. It's no new development. And it would be a mistake to think that Petrohawk was not aware of horizontal CV potential. Considering their experience in their fields around Ruston, I think they know as much or more about the CV formation in that location as any operator.
Skip,
Do you have any idea how large an area we are talking about where the cv is " tight "(low permeability) in Bienville Parish. Since this is no new development is thier a map showing where the sand is " tight " so interested parties will have an idea where horizontal cv wells will be productive? Would the cv horizontal wells drain a larger area than a shale well? Thanks for all your time with answering my questions.
Horseman, I do not know that there is any public source for that information. You can gather some data yourself with a little time spent on SONRIS Lite. Make a list of the fields in your area and look up their code numbers. Search Wells By Field on SONRISE LITE. Look at the Well Files for recent CV wells and see if they list a TVD and a MD. The Total Vertical Depth will be to the CV and the difference between it and the Measured Depth will be the length of the lateral. You can also search by operators that you know are drilling CV horizontals. As an example use Questar to review all of their CV horizontals. I do not know the answer to the area drained by a CV horizontal.

The Lithium Connection to Shale Drilling

Shale drilling and lithium extraction are seemingly distinct activities, but there is a growing connection between the two as the world moves towards cleaner energy solutions. While shale drilling primarily targets…
