It is time for the Mississippi site to have the discussions about Mississippi wells.

There are 5 new pending permits and petitions before the board--two by Goodrich and 3 by EnCana.

There is a South offset to the Crosby Well and a proposed a well to the SE in 2N 1E. These are in Wilkinson.

EnCana has proposed 2 wells adjacent to each other north of the Ash Wells in Amite.

There is also a proposed well in Sections 5 and 8 in 1N 4E in Amite.

The procedure so far has been to get a force integration permit--to force the landowners to lease; then not drill the wells immediately. (This is an abuse, particularly by EnCana, by which they use the force integration statute to help get the prospect leased--then they don't drill before the force integration permit expires.  They drill instead when they are good and ready.)

But, being in a unit is a hell of a good start even if it doesn't get drilled immediately--and it looks like poor ole Mississippi is getting more than its share of permits.

I agree it may dampen the enthusiasm of Encana, which is critical at this point since they are formulating their drilling plans for 2014, but you have to consider that the problems with drilling plugs that they have had on the Ash,Smith and FC wells are completion related and not the fault of the TMS formation. Since they have been landing above the rubble zone, they have had only minor issues drilling  wells. The completion problems are not the fault of the formation IMO. The TMS wells of late are better than the average EF well. Someone I recently spoke with who personally supervised a drilling rig in the EF for 3 years tells me the TMS will ultimately be better than the EF in his opinion. I hope he is right.

Seek an attorney, but not just any attorney -  pick one that specializes in minerals and leasing and one that represents landowners NOT oil companies - for that you might need to do some research. You might do just as well with a seasoned mineral agent/landman.

If he/she tells you the lease being offered to you looks fine - get a second opinion!  IMO

That depends on how you define good. I have always heard that there is no such thing as a good attorney. You should probably limit your search to finding a competent one, if you want to be successful.

My, what a lawyerly response!

I went to law school at LSU, have a lot of lawyer friends and even some lawyers in the family and I worked with lawyers for over 20 years as chief legal compliance officer for a financial institution with 250 offices. Lots of reliance on lawyers and lawyers have done a lot for me. I  spent my working  life with lawyers. I was joking of course about not being able to find a good one. I  know 2.5 good ones.  Just kidding!!!  I have a lot of respect for their profession actually. I can only disparage them tongue in cheek. There are lots of really "good" and competent lawyers out there really. IMO

Steve, do you serve as your own counsel when it comes to your family's mineral estate; or is there a lawyer or firm (from the 2.5 good ones) that you would recommend?

I used a  Louisiana mineral agent who had prior experience dealing with the operator I leased to.
