My daughter and her husband leased their land to Petrohawk in the Elm Grove field and have received their bonus check. Sometime this morning while they were gone to town, someone painted a marker on the pavement in front of their land that said "Petrohawk cleared". Has anyone ever seen a sign like that? Does anyone know what it means?

Do you know what Section T& R they are in?
My guess would be to let others know that Petrohawk has "cleared" or signed that property up already. That way other Petrohawk landmen or other landmen for that matter know it is leased without having to talk to the landowners. I actually have never seen that painted before but it sure makes sense to me.
If that is what it represent, that would indicate the landmen are going door-to-door soliciting landowners, before they check state records to see if the landowner actually owns the mineral rights to the property. I am not saying that your guess is incorrect, I just find it funny to think of landmen soliciting door-to-door, if that is what it actually does mean.

Another idea would be that the land has been cleared for construction. Be it for actually drilling of a well, or for the placement of pipe, the land has been surveyed, recorded, and cleared (approved) for work to begin.
If the landmen are actually going door to door, that does not mean they have not already checked to see if they have their mineral rights.
But I do know this for a fact.......there was a landman with one of the big O&G companies that did go door to door up W McKinley in Haughton to lease their mineral rights.
What better way to sell their company than to go straight to the door? Today most everyone has caller id and answering machines. If they don't know the number, they don't pick up. If they send a letter and it looks like junk, it goes in the trash. Door-to-door landmen sound like a good idea to me! Get the foot in the door, get the signature. BUT the mineral data should be checked first then the landman should work from a list and go door to door. You know, southern hospitality and all considered.
