The culture of personal enrichment over ethical responsibilities exists throughout government bureaucracy and private business. That it has been allowed to infect the inspectors/regulators within the MMS is not a surprise. Time to clean house. And limit civil service protections for federal employees in sensitive, safety related positions.

Jay: If the report is accurate (and I'm not referring to the meth or porn references) as to the allegations of inspectors allowing company employees to fill out reports and giving inspection reports indicating compliance when such is not the case to curry favor for future employment, then there need not be any connection in fact to the BP disaster. IMO, it's time to have a full review of regulations regarding all off shore drilling and to clean house at the MMS and all other agencies that have regulatory/inspection responsibilities in that regard.

I remember this came out a year ago when Salazar was first appointed. Then he used it as a mandate for change. IMO, you can only shoot that gun once. This came off to me as rehashed headlines to divert potential blame.

I remember the old story as well. And the snorting cocaine from a toaster oven (huh?).

I took the new story to mean that he only shot the guy in charge with the gun and didn't change the way the agency is run.

I didn't find any of this as a way of putting the responsibility for the Gulf disaster with the MMS. Just pointing out the inadequacy of their oversight.

I just understood it as a reminder that in all sectors, business and government, that you if you let the regulated get to cozy with the regulator you will have major problems.

I don't see where this is any different than what happened in the banking/real estate collapse.
