TD, there are some aspects of the TRRC website that are better but overall Sonris is the best.
Nearly every lawyer in DeSoto Parish has entered o&g specialization in the last two years-follow the money as they say in the movies. Before that, most were in fact civil/criminal/family/jack of all trades & even district attornies. I am not surprised that the o&g companies are using "divorce lawyers" to do their title searches-should make for some interesting division orders, ownership squabbles, previously unknown relatives (and a good possibility many of your new relatives will coincidentally be serving on the DeSoto Police Jury-lol!!!)
It makes a somewhat humorous story but I doubt seriously that O&G companies are using local lawyers who are not qualified. They know better and there is no shortage of capable and experienced attorneys and landmen to conduct title searches and prepare division orders in locales outside of the Play. Lafayette, Houston, OK City, Tulsa, Denver, etc. The attorneys who have morphed into O&G attorneys since April '08 aren't getting their work from the industry, they are, IMO, getting that work from land/mineral owners who do not know that they are not qualified.
I would have to agee with you Skip.
I agree also. Speaking from personal experience, you really should use an attorney from Shreveport and not leave it to the ones in the small towns. I have an awesome one now.
It may take contacting multiple attorneys/firms with O&G experience as there will be instances of conflicts with existing clients. If you have a legal issue with Petrohawk for example, those who do legal work for the Hawk will not take your business. And all the really good attorneys/firms are quite busy. Still it is possible to find experienced legal council with a little persistence. And yes, Missy, it is a really good feeling to have one that you think highly of in your corner.
I remember back at the first of the play when some attorneys with no O&G experience got burned by trying to play landman. I think that the word got out to others that you don't come in with short pants on and that this isn't the same as running real estate title.
I trained under an attorney that had graduated Tulane and never took the bar examine, he went directly to the oilfields. He retired from Shell having worked in there inshore land department for years. Whenever I see an older Shell document recorded it generally has his signature. Back then a lot of what I was doing was going to Lisco & Lewis for a title opinion and most of the time it would wind up with this certain attorney. My training attorney told me that no matter how hard we would try it would always come back with curative work to be done if this attorney worked on it.
My mentor attorney past away just after Katrina and I have heard that the L&L attorney has retired. Damn I mis my friend Julian "Butch" Combs.
I wouldn't knock all the small town attorneys. There are some great one out thers.
Cindy, I cannot confirm that the well is on production but it is a great well. I believe it is likely that it is producing to sales.

Cindy,

I have heard from several folks that it took them 6 months before they were paid.
Cindy, yes - you should primarily look to Exco for payment of royalties.
YOu should always look to your own lessor for royalties, however, the check will probally come from the operator or their representitiive.
