I am an oil and gas lawyer in Houston. SOP is for an oil company to get a title lawyer do a drilling title opinion. The lawyer will analyze all unit mineral owners' title and point out to the operator all "title defects," big or small, that they see. The lawyer will recommend the company take curative action to cure the "defects." Apparently, the attorney noticed an issue with your title and has told the operator to get an affidavit of ownership from you that they can file in the county property records. This will "cure" the defect. My guess is it is not a big title issue, but I suggest you ask them what specifically they believe the issue to be. The affidavit will likely describe the property at issue, and include a statement as to your ownership interest in the property. It is intended to put any person out there on notice that you are claiming title to the property.

I just completed an Affidavit of Heirship, Form 53-111A for the same reason. Got a family member here in California to attest to the facts, had it notarized, and sent it to be recorded in Nacogdoches.
