Looking at the Haynesville completions, sometimes a pressure is reported and sometimes not.  Why is that the case?  As a general rule, does a higher pressure indicate a better well?  If the well is being produced with a larger choke, does the operating pressure drop as compared to what it would be with a smaller choke?
Bud, yes.  Higher pressure is better.  And this weekly article sometimes omits the pressure reading.  You can use the well Serial Number to review the completion and well test results on SONRIS Lite and, if you desire greater detail, SONRIS Classic.  The choke setting is important to note.  Operators have gradually adopted more restrictive choke settings in an effort to boost the Estimated Ultimate Recoverable (EUR) reserves for each well.  The choke setting on some wells may indicate a restricted take away capacity for the gathering system in a given area.  Formation pressure will drop along with production over the life of a well.  The operator will open the choke incrementally over that period of time.

Thanks.  As a followup, without knowing any more about the wells than in these reports, can any comparison be drawn between wells as far as how good they might be with description as follows regarding initial production:

12/64 choke, 5000 mcfd, 7000 psi

22/64 choke, 13968 mcfd, 6286 psi

24/64 choke, 16500 mcfd, 1950 psi

I know only how they produce in the long term is the ultimate answer, but was curious on your thoughts.

The better well, long term, is likely the one on the tightest choke with the highest pressure.  The pressure on the last one appears to be a typo in the record.  I do not recall seeing any HA horizontal well with a comparable IP on that choke setting with that low a pressure.

Skip,

I noticed several wells spud in RR parish that are in the Jurassic, upper and middle.  Can you breifly explain where the Jurassic differs from HA wells?  Is this the mid Bossier?

Jeff

Jeff, the wells on this Locatiions list are new permits.  The term, Jurassic, has been used since the beginning of the Haynesville Shale Play by a small number of operators, mainly EnCana and SWEPI, as a drilling and production unit designation.  The Jurassic sequence or system contains the Cotton Valley Group, the Bossier, the Haynesville and the Smackover in the stratigraphic column grouped together as Upper Jurassic.  Jurassic is roughly equivalent for practical purposes to Haynesville when discussing drilling units and wells.  What really matters is the depth definition in the Unit Order approved by the state.  That is specific.  The unit designation name is general.  A unit or well designated Haynesville could just as well be producing from the Bossier Shale.  As could one designated Jurassic.
Thanks for the great information.  Our land is in 17N 7W Sec. 1  Bienville Parish.  Do you think the play may be coming our way?
Daniel, I have seen nothing that indicates 17N - 7W is prospective for the Haynesville Shale.  It is too far north and east of the shale as presently defined.  I have found no interest by operators for clients' acreage beyond the SW quadrant of 17N - 9W, nor east of 16N - 9W.
Skip;

Is this location list for new permits only. My interest is in Sec 17 T 9n R 11w,
Jean Larsen Well Serial # 242201 permitted on 10/12/2010. I'm confused about permitting
alt wells with no action on the above permitted well. A big thank you for all your help, as I.m new to all of this!

James
Yes, James.  New permits are listed under Locations, completion results under Completions.  Once an application for alternate unit well locations is approved by the state, the operator may, or may not, permit them in any number and on any time frame.  The development trend seems to be moving more toward multiple wells drilled sequentially or simultaneously in the same unit as opposed to operators drilling initial wells in all units followed by a secondary well in all units.  Some of this activity is likely experimentation with unit drilling designs to improve fracture propagation/drainage and Estimated Ultimate Recoverable (EUR) reserves for the unit as a whole.  The great value of the HS is the ability to produce by repeatable use of shared infrastructure.  The process is often described as being more akin to manufacturing that to traditional exploration and production.

Skip  -- Indigo Minerals seems to be permitting a horizontal Cotton Valley in Section 23 T 15 N R 15 W, Caddo Parish. Do you feel like this will be a trend in the area? Also, is there some Horizontal Cotton Valley completions in the area. As always, THANKS for your input.

Treeman

treeman,  a number of companies are drilling horizontal CV wells, EXCO and QEP come to mind.  In Indigo's case, they have a joint venture agreement with Chesapeake covering a wide area of the Play.  In those joint operating areas Indigo holds and develops the "shallow" rights and Chesapeake the "deep" rights.  I expect to see Indigo drill horizontal CV wells everywhere they deem that the science supports the benefits.  Before the Haynesville Shale popped up and sucked all the air out of the E&P room, the next big play on the horizon was CV horizontals.  We will see more areas proven as good CV horizontal opportunities but it's hard to guesstimate the amount of drilling given the low price of nat gas.

There are some units with CV names that include the Haynesville.  Where this occurs, you'll have to check the depths to tell any CV wells from HA wells.

The Lithium Connection to Shale Drilling

Shale drilling and lithium extraction are seemingly distinct activities, but there is a growing connection between the two as the world moves towards cleaner energy solutions. While shale drilling primarily targets…
