Mercedes To Bring Natural Gas Powered Vehicles To U.S.

Mercedes-Benz will be revealing the compact B-Class hatch that has been built with a powertrain – which is designed to be powered by compressed natural gas. They will be showing this new design at the Washington Auto Show. Mercedes has already produced a dual-fuel version of the B-Class in Europe that can run on either petrol or compressed natural gas or both.

They have hopes that this same model or one even better will make its way to the United States. William Craven – the general manager for the regulatory affairs for Daimler’s Washington office told Automotive News that they want to test it for the U.S. market. “We’re testing the market” he said.

Interesting, Alongview, thanks for posting.  I did a little search looking for the fuel tank configuration which is one of the challenges to CNG fueled cars particularly compacts.  There are 5.  And the range is impressive.  Now your talking.  LOL!

So cars are readily available when ever CNG refueling sources become available..
180 mile range and a home refueling system would be practical for a number of people.  How often do we drive more than 180 miles in a day?
Probably like when I lived in Indiana and would get snowed in. I didn't really have anywhere to go but it drove me nuts not being able too...

So you put a CNG storage tank at your house like propane.  Do they have this type of trucks in our area hauling CNG.  We could be a test market and model for the US, especially with that commercial CNG station somewhere close by.  HHHmmmmmmmmmmm thought Jack Blake

If gasoline goes to $4.00 /gallon soon and stays there the US administration will have to endorse CNG as the motor fuel.  Why do they not want to do this now...........

With Bossier stations and the one in Coushatta being available next year I will be in.
The technology exists for "at home fueling" by way of existing natural gas service.  And it's relatively affordable.  However the standard unit takes some hours to fill an empty tank.  A unit with a shorter fill time is available but more costly.  With a 180 mile range, most of us could easily live with over night filling from the cheaper unit.  The need for "fast fill" units would be more for public fueling stations on major roadways.  Put a nat gas station in Tyler for example and a trip from Shreveport to Dallas is easily accomplished at a considerable cost saving.
Who sells home fuel stations, Skip?  I've Googled to find manufacturers, not distributors.

Frank, I can't remember the company name and they may have been sold or gone out of business.  They exhibited at the first Haynesville Shale Expo here in Shreveport.  We discussed the company and it's technology in a site group named CNG Cars which seems to have disappeared.  I suggest that you go through the American Clean Skies organization for information on a current supplier.

I found the brochure from the Expo and the company was Phill (www.myphill.com).  I can not find a website for the company so I think they are out of business now.  The technology is still around.  Here's a video of the home unit.

Here's what happened to the company.

Check the home page for fuel systems solutions (symbol FSYS).  Look under products - infrastructure.  It will show you one of their subsidiaries that makes several refueling options from in garage units to fast fill compressors for stations/fleets.

If the hatchback does not quite do it for you, how about an 800 hp CNG Mercedes?
