Austin Chalk in Louisiana: including Avoyelles, Rapides, Pointe Coupee, Florida Parishes, East Baton Rouge, Vernon

Horizontal drilling, improved seismic testing,  and liner casing are offering new hope for the deep minerals in parts of the Austin Chalk which runs from near Austin, Texas through the middle of Louisiana to Biloxi Mississippi.

In 1995, the USGS determined that the Austin Chalk is one of our Nation's largest, onshore domestic unconventional, continuous-type oil resource. More recently, exploration and production in frontier areas of Texas and Louisiana have shown that the Austin Chalk has additional potential as a continuous-type deep-gas resource mostly to the east and downdip of existing oil plays.

Over a decade later, now leasing and drilling activity is picking up in certain parishes of Central Louisiana following improved technologies.

Yes, that's another excellent point. The operator is paying 100% of the costs, but only receives 75-80% of the income. This Net Revenue Interest (NRI) is another important variable in the "economics equation".

First horizontal well falls short of expectations; hope still on for overall production

The first horizontal well drilled in the re-targeted Tuscaloosa Marine Shale and Austin Chalk beneath Avoyelles has fallen short of expected production, but oil officials are still optimistic.

The Deshotels no. 1 well is producing perhaps less than its potential, due to drilling problems. Located between Dupont and Odenburg, the well was plagued with situations which engineers have learned from. The second well, the P. Deshotels well, named after farmer Patrick Deshotels, should be completed in May, and will benefit from the mistakes or misfortunes in new drilling techniques that are still being fine tuned by the industry.

The following is the latest update from Pryme Oil of Australia who have a forty percent working interest in the Dupont well which was permitted by Nelson Energy of Shreveport:

Deshotels 20-H No.1 (40% Working Interest / 30% NRI)

The well is currently producing at 240 barrels of oil per day. Natural gas is being flared onsite until such time as construction of the flow line to the main gas sales pipeline is complete. Based on well production characteristics to date we expect this rate of production to remain fairly flat.

“Understandably investors have paid a great deal of attention to the performance of the first well to be drilled in our Turner Bayou Chalk project. Based on surrounding production, the strong geological data from drilling and the encouraging physical signs, bottom hole pressures, the amount of oil produced while drilling and the sizeable flare burning on site, the Deshotels 20-H No.1 should have yielded a substantially higher production rate if it had been properly completed,” said Justin Pettett, Pryme’s Managing Director.

“Mechanical issues are a risk in deep horizontal wells and, unfortunately, we have encountered some of these in our first well. Nevertheless, we are confident that the Turner Bayou Chalk project will prove to be a very good investment for Pryme,” said Mr Pettett.

The project focus is on the drilling of well number two which is expected to spud in early May.

Madman,

Pryme's latest detailed presentation on the Avoyelles project is here:

Slides 7-8 will be of interest to you.

If you want the facts, the units on our project were established in Office of Conservation Order 1042-A-4. You can get a copy of the order from their office.

If you want to get excited, read press releases from small Australian public companies.  :)

Kirk, According to that Pryme is planning 30+ wells on 640 acre spacing. Why the difference in what you are saying and what they are saying?
my last post captures that.

Madman,  I was wondering if you could give me any information about who is leasing land in St. Landry parish. I have some land about .5 miles south of the parish line and I was contacted about leasing land, but I could not hear the call back # or the drilling company they were repersenting on the voice mail.

If anyone esle has any more information about who is leasing and the rate it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

I apologize for not replying sooner.  I just realized tonight that a question was directed at me.  The landman was from a company named Tagco out of Hammond.  They represented Anadarko.  The company went before the conservation board this week to get their tract adopted, so I am hopeful that work is imminent in the area.

Is there anything to the rumors about some monster oil wells over in East Texas which are supposed to be producing from a formation below the Haynesville/Bossier & Smackover (the Norphlet I guess).  Supposedly 125 barrels an hour.  A guess at the operator is Anadarko or Valence Operation Company (out of Kingwood, TX).  It could be the Austin Chalk formation, but my understanding is that theses wells would be north of the Austin Chalk.

Sorry to be throwing something out there will very little information, but I'm just hoping (like many others) to find a large oil play across Northeast Texas and North Louisiana.

The rumor is oil from the Smackover.  And there is nothing in the public record to support the rumors.  As with most rumors, they are magnified over time.  The initial production was rumored to be 2000 bbl/day.  Now I guess it's up to 3000.  LOL!  There is a particular well that the rumor is tied to and when it is reported complete, it will be public record and we will know for sure.

Does anyone have any new info ?

Does it look like any of the play will come up into southern Sabine Parish, or out by toledo bend lake?
