Tony,

 

I think you are almost certainly right that this will be a horizontal well. In fact, I hear second-hand from an operator in the Lick Creek field that it will have a 7000-ft horizontal leg, probably extending in the north-south direction across most of sections 6 and 7.

 

There is also a legal notice about it in this week's Haynesville News, but I do not have access to it so I don't know how much info it gives.

I be they drill vertical first, take a log and cores.

 

Probally won't drill horz.  until they have some better geology. The unit size is typical for areas adjacent to the state line with fractional sections

Baron, you may be right, but surely they must be contemplating a horizontal completion for a unit this size. The usual size for a vertical Smackover well in this area is 160 acres and, even considering the fractional section problem, I doubt that a vertical unit would be more than 240 acres.

I haven't seen first-hand the legal notice in The Haynesville News about this application, but someone read portions of it to me, and I think it said that the well would be drilled to a depth of around 11,000 feet, and possibly 17,000 feet, so this would give some credence to your hypothesis that they want to leave their options open at this point.

I agree that horizontal completions are probally contemplated. I think we have to consider that larger units are the trend nowadays though. They will want to hold all this acreage they are buying, especially while its relativly cheap.

 

I wouldn't expect much news for a while though. Tite hole.
