Who has heard the rumors of the possibility of oil deposits below the shale area? How deep and then what does it take to get that out if it does so exist?

Not a rumor...it's a fact. Look in the photo's and see the map found that is dated October 2007 and supplied by the USGS. It's impressive what's underneath Louisiana. Their is a gas map and an Oil Map.

can you find us a link to the map.

I have a question regarding drilling depth. I saw on the Sonris site that Well 237992, Nelson 18H 1 permit is for 18,200 feet depth. That is significantly deeper than any of the other wells listed in DeSoto Parish.
What would be the purpose of such a deep well?
How do you know which direction the horizontal is going? I'm interested in well #237943.
Thanks Pecanman. Do actually grow or have a pecan orchard? That's something i've thought about....
Thanks Gray Sands,

That information includes all of the maps and information and I will look at it over the weekend. Thanks for attaching that document. I couldn't remember where I saved it.

The Smackover formation underlies the shale. The Smackover is a very prolific producer. The Smackover extends at least from Mexico to Alabama. It is probably the most prolific producer in Noth Webster and north Claiborne Parishes. From a geologic view I see no reason not to believe it could produce in other areas. It is productive in east Texas, Miss. and Alabama.
Always include depth limitations in your leases...never "all formations below ground level.
I put the standard 100' below production clause in my lease.

I now wish I had limited to a certain depth. I have seen a lease in my area that specifies they can only drill between 9702' and 11,334'. NOW THAT'S A LEASE WITH NO WIGGLE ROOM.

Hindsight is 20/20.
The Austin Ckalk is a good bit above the HS. Below the HS is Smackover, Norphlet, Pine Hill Anhydrite, Louann Salt, Werner Anhydrite. Mixed in with the HS are the Gilmer Limestone and Buckner Anhydrite.
