Several addiitonal thoughts:
[1] When you research an oil and gas attorney on Martindale.com [Martindale Hubbell] lookfor an "AV" rated attorney/firm. Most libraries will have a reference section with Martindale Hubbell reference books. Each state is listed separately in the series of books. In the front of each book the attorney/firm is listed under city and town. The rating, if any, is next to the name. The speciality is then listed. The remaining volume has the specific attorney or firm listed with information about each attorney, their speciality and position in the firm.
[2] Any reputable law firm will do a client search prior to accepting a retainer from a client. Particularly the "chain law firm" found in several cities or countries. It is absolutely imperative that the client search is conducted. Some of these large firms will know immediately which oil and gas companies they represent therefore a potential conflict of interest. Some firms may not know an oil and gas company has or is being represented by another office. If a law firm represents an OG company that you are NOT negotiating with the law firm may not see their relationship, with you, as a conflict. This could work in your favor given the attorney/firm is knowledgeable of the "mind set" of OG companies.
Henry has an excellent point. Ask the attorney if he/she is experienced in leasing in the Haynesville.
[3] If an attorney has accepted a retainer and he/she is not returning your calls or e-mails contact them in writing. If this fails contact them again and demand a refund of your retainer. If the situation becomes dire you can always threaten with a complaint to the state bar. Some states will not deal with money owed to a client in the form of actually getting your money back. It depends on the situation.
This can be a very frustrating situation but you must remain focused and find a knowledgeable attorney.
