Haynesville Shale & GHS Members Highlighted: "SHALEIONAIRES" on 60 Minutes this Sunday Evening

"SHALEIONAIRES - While some complain that extracting natural gas from shale rock formations is tainting their water supply, others who have allowed drilling on their property are getting wealthy and becoming "shaleionaires." Lesley Stahl reports. Shachar Bar-On and Meghan Frank are the producers."

I was approached by the producer, Shachar, to assist in locating individuals for this segment. Some of you may have spoken to Shachar, or other producers, as well. Because of our assistance, the residents of NW Louisiana will be represented on this segment to its 13 million viewers. 60 Minutes airs Sundays at 7 p.m on CBS. ET/PT. Check your local listings.

Among those interviewed for the segment are Northwest Louisiana residents CB Leatherwood and Mike Smith, who are actually cousins. The 60 Minutes crew spent a day at the Leatherwood residence interviewing both Mike and CB at the same time. If you have seen the Haynesville Documentary, you have seen Mike Smith. Mike was one of the three whose Haynesville story was featured in that documentary.

I spoke with CB shortly after the interview and he told me that he was impressed and pleased with the 60 Minutes crew finding them, “down to earth” and “real nice.” CB's goal was to show them southern hospitality during their visit. And of course, that means good food.

On a Sunday in May, an assistant producer, out of N.Y.C., showed up to screen the couple to see if they adequately fit the profile of what they needed in the segment. When the producer arrived at the Leatherwood’s home, fresh coffee cake and coffee were waiting to be had.

Toward the end of the screening (and coffee cake), CB informed the producer that she could probably find folks that had done “better” (made more money) on the Haynesville Shale. “I didn’t think we’d actually get selected,” Leatherwood added.

[Editor's Note: The producer's found CB a great story teller]

Selected they were and a CBS caravan showed up on the day of the interview with videographers, photographers and producers in tow. It was a typical hot and muggy summer day. The crew got busy and as CB puts it, “they took pictures of everything! Chickens, cats, dogs, mules…everything.”

Lesley Stahl, who would be conducting the interview, showed up to their Sabine Parish home in a chauffeured Lincoln Town Car. After Upon entering their home, Stahl promptly asked, “may I use your restroom and borrow a can of hairspray, I’ve been on a drilling rig all day.”

Welcome to showbiz.

I would certainly deem that comment rather political, E B-M.
I actually thought it was a pretty good segment. Punch wells and make the industry accountable. Sounds reasonable. Best
I felt 60-minutes was leaning a little too much toward the 'CSI' side of the Shale Fracking... but all in all was a pretty good episode. I wish they had gone a little more into the good things that 'gas explosion' has really brought about! A little more in-depth visit into the local economies of these townships and the plus side of that.
At the IOGCC Annual meeting in Tucson (starts today through Wednesday), USEPA is revealing to the State Regulators the preliminary scope of their congressionally-ordered nationwide Hydraulic Fracturing Study. Word is that USEPA (and their consultants) want to include a STATEWIDE evaluation of the entire world of oil and gas drilling/completion in each state! (Not just the gas shale areas in each state). This proposal is far beyond any reasonable review of hydraulic fracturing. Some may legitimately call this "study" a WITCH HUNT! I have learned that In Louisiana alone, the Office of Conservation maintains over 7.5 MILLION well records. Add to that, hundreds of thousands of water well/aquifer records and information. Federal government gone crazy.
75% - Mini "Gasland"; 20% - Aubrey, 5% - "Shaleionaires"
Les, that's the best description yet....."75% - Mini "Gasland"; 20% - Aubrey, 5% - "Shaleionaires"

The only people that I believe have a legitamate gripe are those in the NE where the government owns the rights in areas of dense population. I wouldn't want to take a 1%+/- chance on my water being tainted if I was not getting financial gain, especially in compilation with noise, trucks, other potential dangers, etc.

There appears to be a very small (sub 1%) chance of disaster. In saying that, the bottom line is that if a land owner wants to take that chance....it's their right. If someone is upset about the process, noise, view, etc. then don't buy the property or research the property one is buying to make sure there are set backs, who controls the minerals, etc. I also find it interesting that the folks, like in 60 Minutes, sold their rights for $25/ac to a company I've never heard of and then complained about the process.
Parkdota: You've not heard of Cabot Oil & Gas? They've got my lease, in Nacogdoches CO. Actually, they have a substantial amount of lease hold throughout Nac., San Augustine, Shelby, and Sabine Counties.
Shame, the "teasers," even the local ones, emphasized the "Shaleionaires" aspect, now you quantify that particular segment as receiving only 5%. Can't wait to see what the holiday billings bring.

Here's one for you, from a local billboard along I-49 near the exit to 3132 ...

"Let It Flow, Let It Flow, Let It Flow,
Happy Holidays from ..."

Want to guess the business to whom this belongs? Betcha can't, lol.

Thanks for putting the video on this site. I missed it on TV. Thanks for all your work keeping this site current.

As I live out of state and am receiving the benefits it is hard for me to know if the segmant was fair, however I know that there are the good, bad and the ugly. We need the natural gas for our country to get off the oil from foreign countries and I am sure there will be problems with the water system at some point. Common sense tells you that and from what I have learned in 80 years also tells me that companies put profit first. The natural gas is great for the people of Louisiana and the state to have this income and the jobs. It has always been needed. I hope the companies drilling the wells will do the best that they can to protect the people, the water and the environment as they put their money and their expertise to work for the country. We need the gas and we need the companies and we need the jobs. Progress will always bring a few problems along with it. Thanks again for giving us information and the opportunity to express our opinions. Bet Crain
Anytime you listen to stories on CBS, NBC or ABC, you have to know you are dealing with the liberal media and they are going to give any subject their own liberal spin. They are pretty shameless about it too.
Well...it was bad enough that CBS had to use "the ole dead cow ploy" to try and jade America's opinion of natural gas, but then they had to go and use Cabot and the "flammable drinking water technique". OUCH!
I flipped from a ball game and joined the 60 min show in progress. I admit I didn't stay long as it quickly became very clear that this was a hatchet job on the petroleum exploration industry as opposed to a human intrest story about how some southern families were doing great because of the shale gas production. I should have known that no oppotunity to throw rocks at certain subjects is missed by the mainstream media. Those include Big oil, conservatives, christians, etc, etc. You know what I mean and that good news is not news, and all "facts" relating to the foregoing require a negative explanatory spin for us simpletons in flyover country. My bottom line is that I expect most operators do the best they can to operate as reasonable and prudent as it increases profit and reduces risk from lawsuits. As in most cases those who take the lease money should do so only after being informed of the down side and then protect themselves.

The Lithium Connection to Shale Drilling

Shale drilling and lithium extraction are seemingly distinct activities, but there is a growing connection between the two as the world moves towards cleaner energy solutions. While shale drilling primarily targets…
