Haynesville Shale & GHS Members Highlighted: "SHALEIONAIRES" on 60 Minutes this Sunday Evening
"SHALEIONAIRES - While some complain that extracting natural gas from shale rock formations is tainting their water supply, others who have allowed drilling on their property are getting wealthy and becoming "shaleionaires." Lesley Stahl reports. Shachar Bar-On and Meghan Frank are the producers."

I was approached by the producer, Shachar, to assist in locating individuals for this segment. Some of you may have spoken to Shachar, or other producers, as well. Because of our assistance, the residents of NW Louisiana will be represented on this segment to its 13 million viewers. 60 Minutes airs Sundays at 7 p.m on CBS. ET/PT. Check your local listings.
Among those interviewed for the segment are Northwest Louisiana residents CB Leatherwood and Mike Smith, who are actually cousins. The 60 Minutes crew spent a day at the Leatherwood residence interviewing both Mike and CB at the same time. If you have seen the Haynesville Documentary, you have seen Mike Smith. Mike was one of the three whose Haynesville story was featured in that documentary.
I spoke with CB shortly after the interview and he told me that he was impressed and pleased with the 60 Minutes crew finding them, “down to earth” and “real nice.” CB's goal was to show them southern hospitality during their visit. And of course, that means good food.
On a Sunday in May, an assistant producer, out of N.Y.C., showed up to screen the couple to see if they adequately fit the profile of what they needed in the segment. When the producer arrived at the Leatherwood’s home, fresh coffee cake and coffee were waiting to be had.
Toward the end of the screening (and coffee cake), CB informed the producer that she could probably find folks that had done “better” (made more money) on the Haynesville Shale. “I didn’t think we’d actually get selected,” Leatherwood added.

Selected they were and a CBS caravan showed up on the day of the interview with videographers, photographers and producers in tow. It was a typical hot and muggy summer day. The crew got busy and as CB puts it, “they took pictures of everything! Chickens, cats, dogs, mules…everything.”
Lesley Stahl, who would be conducting the interview, showed up to their Sabine Parish home in a chauffeured Lincoln Town Car. After Upon entering their home, Stahl promptly asked, “may I use your restroom and borrow a can of hairspray, I’ve been on a drilling rig all day.”

I live in the southern tier of NY right across the border from NE PA and about 1 1-2 hours form Dimock, PA. People were offered $25.00/acre when it all started now $5000+/20%.
People in the area are well aware of flaming faucets, its been happening around this area since the 1880's, NYT article flaming river. Also documented and affidavits about flaming water wells long before drilling came to the area. Many have methane in the water and have had it since the first settlers to the area, nothing new here.
Interesting note former 60 minute producer is head of an anti drilling group in Lew Beach, Sullivan County, NY, Brian Ferguson, Catskill Citizens for Safe Energy.
They talked to these people from Dimock and didn't give the other side. Majority in Dimock are pro drilling and Stahl only looked at one side. Dimock is no ghost town as they would have you think. It is now thriving because of the opportunities these companies bring to a once dying area.

When 60 Min called, you should have known Shale was in the crosshairs and that it was going to demean the industry and the "get quick rich quick" selling their souls and the environment for it. Come on. What did everyone really expect? A promo for nat gas? (See my earlier post before this aired) There are way too many "I should have known"s posted here. This is serious folks. The message out in the public is NOT good. Too many Shalers are living in an isolated world where oil & gas is generally perceived as good....except by those who do not own any minerals. Wake up.

I thought it was almost balanced as someone that has an interest and knows more than the average person. That said, between CSI the other night (which my husband had to cover the ears of my 1 and 1/2 mo old grandson's ears because I was yelling at the tv so loud and often at how they were depicting the whole gas drilling industry, I was so pissed, still am,) and 60 minutes a few night later, seeing it in the eyes of someone who knows nothing about the process, the industry, the benefits, etc, I would be scared to death of any drilling of any kind.
I was also yelling last night when they went to the flaming water shot. If I see one more faucet or stream of water on fire I don't know what I'll do. My husband left the room in the 'gasland' waste of good film or digital bites, when the 3rd flaming water shot came on.
I liked that they ended on the future, the need and the benefits, but the other stuff was so over the top wanted to scream.
Again with average person eyes on though, they will eat this all up and only see the graphic horrors of nat gas drilling. Their minds were not hearing the end where the balance was so softly presented.
As a matter of fact the end was so soft, that when the commercials ended, and it was the next segment, I told my husband the ending was not smooth and did not wrap the whole segment up at all.Like they just threw the ending in so they could say they were balanced, as an afterthought.
I would like to know if it was the electric car, coal or wind energy that has put CBS up to this.
I don't neccesarily like Aubrey, but he did try to make the case for nat gas.

it's sad that people don't even expect any sort of fair reportage anymore, not even out of the longest running "hard hitting investigative reports" show on tv. nobody had to put these people up to anything, it's as natural as breathing... oxygen thieves that they are. i'm sure walter lippmann would be proud.

But methane in drinking water is good for your health!
Mostly kidding.
However, apart from the explosion hazard, it's probably not toxic. Don't forget that the gasses in your digestive tract are up to 10% methane. As any schoolboy knows, the methane may even be concentrated enough to actually burn. Not only are you constantly exposed to methane, you actually produce methane.
It's well known that in concentrations low enough to not be explosive, methane is non-toxic to humans. High enough concentrations can cause suffocation from lack of oxygen or anesthetic effects, but the concentration required is much higher than the level at which there is an explosion hazard. There are work environments where workers are constantly exposed to low levels of methane 40 hours a week with no apparent health effects from the methane. People may have natgas leaks in their house for years with no apparent ill effects as long as it doesn't explode.
Of course, if you can't take a long shower without blowing up the house, that's a bad thing.
Or if there are toxic chemicals other than methane in your drinking water, that's bad, too.

Gas in water lines is nothing new and in some cases has nothing to do with drilling - Years ago high school boys at Negreet High School would put a match to the water faucets at the school and watch the flame. . . . boys being boys but the gas was there so. . .

Am I the only one who found irony in Aubrey touting natural gas, just has he is positioning his company to be a big oil company? Saying one thing, while doing the other? Talk it up, sell out, and move on.

I think he's just trying to be a good spin doctor in a difficult situation. Obviously CHK can't keep burning this amount of capital drilling for dry ng and tactics will have to change.
