Austin Chalk in Louisiana: including Avoyelles, Rapides, Pointe Coupee, Florida Parishes, East Baton Rouge, Vernon

Horizontal drilling, improved seismic testing,  and liner casing are offering new hope for the deep minerals in parts of the Austin Chalk which runs from near Austin, Texas through the middle of Louisiana to Biloxi Mississippi.

In 1995, the USGS determined that the Austin Chalk is one of our Nation's largest, onshore domestic unconventional, continuous-type oil resource. More recently, exploration and production in frontier areas of Texas and Louisiana have shown that the Austin Chalk has additional potential as a continuous-type deep-gas resource mostly to the east and downdip of existing oil plays.

Over a decade later, now leasing and drilling activity is picking up in certain parishes of Central Louisiana following improved technologies.

Sonris says: P. Deshotels is in production at 600 barrels per day. Good production from a well in chalk that has not been fracted or had a successful stimulation preformed on it.
Jay, I have emailed with Ryan Messer with Pryme and he says that the well was not fracked. Hope this clears things up.

An update on the avoyelles parish austin chalk well from Pryme:

(I am not sure exactly what it means, maybe someone can put it in simpler words)

Work Underway to Acidize Deshotels 20-H No.1 A completion rig has arrived on site to remediate and enhance the production capacity of the

Deshotels 20-H No.1 well in the Turner Bayou Chalk project.

The horizontal leg of the well intersected multiple oil-bearing fracture zones as indicated by mudlog shows and oil and gas produced to surface while drilling. The remediation process will involve re- perforation of the larger fracture systems using a tubing conveyed perforation (TCP) gun, with the objective of achieving a deeper penetration of the formation, followed by the isolation and acidizing of the perforated sections to complete the well bore clean up, enable better communication between the perforated sections and the oil bearing Austin Chalk formation and potentially facilitate oil production at greater levels. Following remediation a flow test will be carried out to establish the flow capacity of the reservoir, the installation of the flow line will be completed and the well will be put into production.

Pryme is confident that the ultimate performance of the well will confirm its view that the Deshotels 20-H No.1 will be a significant oil producer which will provide an attractive financial return.

Shareholders will be kept informed as activities progress. Pryme has a 40% working interest (30% net revenue interest (NRI)) in this well. Project Description

The Deshotels 20-H No.1 well, in Pryme’s Turner Bayou Chalk project in the North Bayou Jack Field, is the first deep well to be drilled within the Turner Bayou 3D seismic survey. The well has been drilled to a depth of 16,400 feet (5,000 metres) vertically with a 3,755 feet (1,144 metre) horizontal leg through the Austin Chalk formation which is predominantly oil bearing in this region. The well location was confirmed using high resolution 3D seismic data from a survey carried out in 2007 and data from surrounding well bores.

Turner Bayou is one of Pryme’s high value projects. It is located in Avoyelles Parish, Louisiana. Pryme has a 40% interest in the Turner Bayou Chalk project area, which is contained within the Turner Bayou 3D seismic survey, and a 52% interest in the balance of Turner Bayou. The Turner Bayou project comprises approximately 80 square miles (50,000 acres) which have been imaged by a proprietary 3D seismic survey. Primary targets are contained within six prospective formations ranging in depth from the Frio formation at 3,000 feet, to the Tuscaloosa formation at 18,000 feet.

Pryme Oil and Gas Limited (“Pryme”) provides the following update on operations and production of the horizontal well at its Turner Bayou project in Southeast Avoyelles Parish.
Turner Bayou comprises approximately 80 square miles (50,000 acres) which have been imaged by a proprietary 3D seismic survey. Primary targets are contained within six prospective formations ranging in depth from the Frio at 3,000 feet, to the Tuscaloosa at 18,000 feet.
The Deshotels 20-H No.1 well is currently producing at a rate of 630 barrels of oil and 430 Mcf of natural gas per day.
The lowest productive interval within the horizontal leg was re-perforated using tubing conveyed perforating equipment. Mechanical issues have temporarily prevented completion of a focused acid treatment of the perforated intervals. The well will be flowed to clean up the perforations and a plan will be developed to complete the acidizing and completion of the well in the coming weeks.
Planning for the second Turner Bayou chalk well, to be spudded before the end May this year, is underway.
Thank you for this information.  There has been an agent in these parts (just north of St. Francisville, LA) leasing land at $25.00 per acre.  He will not say for whom he is leasing nor will he say what his employer seeks.  Too strange for me.

Cocodrie Man:

i just lease my 10.0 acres in T2S-R3W in West Feliciana to Charleston Energy for $125/ac and 1/5th.  The landman that I dealt with said that he wasn't authorized to reveal who he was working for other than it was a major independent.  He was pleasant about it but wouldn't say whom he was buying leases for.  All my neighbors have leased and from what I can gather from talking wth a local attorney over there, Charleston has leased quite a few tracts in the parish.

There has been no activity in this neck of the woods for over 20 years.  There was some interest in the Tuscaloosa Marine Shale in the northern part of the parish a few years ago but that died out pretty quick.  I'm happy with my royalty and I got a pugh clause and a depth severance clause on my lease so I think that I am covered in that sense.  I don't know if a well will be drilled but I am keeping my fingers crossed.  I have been told that there are a few large landowners out here who are holding out for more money and royalty.  They are doing what they think that they need to do but I hope they won't mess things up for us small guys if they don't lease.

Thanks for the info Shep. The $125.00 per acre is what I had heard not $25.00 per acre as stated in an earlier post.

I'm South of you in the Port Hudson area and I have heard that there is a Tusc Marine Shale play developing that runs across both East and West Feliciana. Then again they may be looking at Chalk because of the discovery in Chalk across the river. At 600 barrels a day production that brings in about $55,000 per day gross at these prices for oil. That may have something to do with it and that ain't bad. In this day and time if they are leasing they have intentions to drill.

Thanks again for the info.

Shep and Joe, I think you are talking about something a little different from this thread.  This is mostly about the Austin Chalk/Tuscaloosa play in central LA - from Master's Creek and Southeast into Avoyelles and St. Landry (the Deshotels well with all the Pryme reports above is in ).  I didn't think it was considered part of that Tusc Marine Shale play further to the Southeast, which includes a lot of the Florida parishes (and has been going for a while).  If I'm wrong, let me know.

This is supposedly a new 80k acre lease play.  Would be curious to know what anybody else knows, including whether it is backed by Anadarko.

WH, I don't understand why you think this should be separate other than you might work for someone in the industry that does not want information getting out about what is happening East of the River. According to the maps in the early part of this thread they clearly show that the Austin Chalk extends into the area I'm in. Back in the "hot" days of the Tuscaloosa trend there was a blowout in Austin Chalk while drilling for the Tusc. That well was less than 2 miles from my property. So the question is: Are you saying that the Austin Chalk trend stops at the Mississippi River as for as this site is concerned and only people in Central Louisiana should be posting here and to this thread? If I'm reading your post right I'm in the wrong place with the wrong subject.

At this point in time I'm here trying to figure out whether the leasing activity that we see in this area is related to the discovery in the Deshotels well or whether its a Tusc. Marine Shale play that is restarting and developing or is it both. I was hoping for info from people that are online on this site that might know what is developing East of the river. The question now is: Do I need to start an new thread that deals with the Austin Chalk East of the Mississippi River? And do I need to start a thread that addresses the Tusc. Marine Shale and the possibility that its development is getting going again? There was an earlier post by someone that was clearly wrong about the Deshotels well. I got that corrected. Would love to get your input on whether I'm in the wrong place or not.

Leasing I am aware of has been at $25 per acre per year = $125 per acre for a paid up 5 year lease - a big difference - at least these are the terms I am hearing for W. Feliciana so far. Correct me if I am wrong here.

Steve, it may depend on just "where" in W. Feliciana you are located.  Parishes are far too large of a land segment to be useful for defining O&G activity.  You may want to look at the state auction bids from last week for E. Feliciana and St. Helenda.  I suggest you locate these areas by section-township-range.

The Carla Petro tract supposedly relates to a Tusc sand prospect and not the TMS from what we hear.
