I stumbled across this page -- http://hubpages.com/hub/Green-Drivers-Hub. It gives pictures of several cars (the writeup is BELOW each picture), and wow, if this is correct, and we don't offer us these types of cars in the USA, hmmm... hmmm...

68 mpg, 74 mpg, 58 mpg, a stunning 83 mpg from a minivan? And all quote low emissions.

It's funny, because in the past when I have seen discussions of MPG figures for American cars, I often thought back to 20-30 years ago here, where I swear I remember a couple of cars had MPG figures exceeding 50 mpg.

Anyone know if these numbers are credible?

The reason is that these are all diesel cars. In Europe diesel is much cheaper than here in the states.
In 1992, honda had civics that would get over 50 mpg..and they were gasoline engines..

Searched the web and found all these cars.  The MPG ratings by real driving was lower than the manufactures estaminets by about 20%.

These cars are small.  Most Americans don't like small cars, so there's not a big market here for them.  These cars are made for one thing, moving people from one place to another.  If you want to pull your boat, travel trailer, or haul something home from Lowes, you're not going to do it in one of these.

Europeans pay a Carbon tax and two to three times the price for fuel that Americans pay.  When you see fuel @ $6 to $8 a gallon, and a Carbon tax on the amount of Carbon you release, you'll see a flood of these small cars on our highways.  Every site stated that Americans love their SUV's and only until they can't afford to fill them up, they will continue to buy them and not fuel efficient cars.
