EPA announces hydraulic fracturing study locations

The EPA has announced the locations to be used in the hydraulic fracturing study.    Most notably, Parker County, Texas was left off the list of retrospective studies, while Dish Texas was included.  .  One Coal Bed Methane (CBM) retrospective study location was selected.  Three of five sites selected mention surface spills.  Maybe there is some consideration to regulating surface aspects of fracturing through CWA/SPCC/Stormwater regulations.  DeSoto Parish will be studied in the work targeting new development.

It is a plus for Louisiana that the EPA has included Louisiana's Haynesville Shale in their "prospective study" of gas shale development.  The prospective phase of the EPA study recognizes that Louisiana has shown over the past three years, through the safe and successful completion of over 1,200 natural gas wells, that there are adequate State rules and regulations in place for fracking to be done in a safe and environmentally acceptable manner.  At the end of the day, EPA's two year "cradle to grave" monitoring of a typical Louisiana wellsite and associated fracking operations will be documented as showing that gas shale can, and is, being developed as a viable and safe fuel of the future.
