Skip,
LLOG did the same thing when drilling the Crumholt well to TUSC as a vertical. It looks like this is a new drilling technique.
Sliding is a common practice where you stop rotating while drilling in order to direct your drilling assembly. Your drilling mud motor has a slight bend in it that allows you to direct the bit on the proper direction. The mud motor uses the fluid being pumped to turn the bit without added pipe rotation.
When you slide you slow your rate of penetration and the efficiency of cuttings removal, for that reason many companies now use rotary steerable drilling assemblies. With rotary steerables you can choose your direction while you rotate.
Thanks, Keith. Joe and I are familiar with sliding and it's uses.
Yeah I misunderstood what you guys were talking about. Sliding in the vertical section!
In the Gulf we sometimes have to do a touch up slide in the vertical section just to keep vertical depending on the formation, but early in a well we can have possible collision issues with other existing wells close to the surface location, so that would be another reason to slide early if you were drilling on a pad with multiple wells for instance.
Keith,
I understand the operation of directing the bit in a certain direction and the use of the sliding technique. However, in the Crumholt well that was drilled this past Spring it was the first time I had seen it used in a vertical hole that was not in a lateral and was not going to be lateraled. I agree with you this method would seem to slow drilling penetration. So I'm not sure of the benefits while drilling vertical. Just one of those puzzling things about these new drilling methods.
Yeah I didn't properly read what you guys were talking about
I can think of three reasons that you would slide in a vertical well.
One is that they got too aggressive with weight on bit and had to make adjustments to stay vertical.
The other is that they had a known formation anomaly such as a loss zone that they wanted to avoid.
Another would be existing or past wells that were drilled in the area that they needed to avoid.
I think that you'll see more sliding in the vertical section of wells as multiple well pads pop up during the development mode of shale plays, simply due to collision issues. You will also have more avoidance of problem formations as we learn the areas more.

Nice well. Thanks for the heads up, TD,P.
I see they are working on 245641 as well

How did these other wells turn out?
Shale drilling and lithium extraction are seemingly distinct activities, but there is a growing connection between the two as the world moves towards cleaner energy solutions. While shale drilling primarily targets…

AboutAs exciting as this is, we know that we have a responsibility to do this thing correctly. After all, we want the farm to remain a place where the family can gather for another 80 years and beyond. This site was born out of these desires. Before we started this site, googling "shale' brought up little information. Certainly nothing that was useful as we negotiated a lease. Read More |
