skip, do i have a correct understanding that the nomenclature of apc's caddo parish location listed above as " 4-34h " means that the well's surface location will be in section 4 and, assuming they make a well, that in addition to producing from that section, it would also produce from the S/2 of section 34 of T20N R15W? thanks in advance, jim weyland

jim, HA RA SU58 is a 860 acre unit including the south one half of Section 34(20N-15W) and all of Section 4(19N-15W). Yes, the surface location is in Section 4 but the "4" in the well name is referring to the unit and not the surface location. For example APC has HA RA SU55 which includes Section 35(20N-15W) and the north one half of Section 3(19N-15W). This well is HA RA SU55;COMEGYS 35-3 H #1 however the surface location for this well is in Section 26. Those mineral interests within the unit boundaries will receive royalty from any and all unit wells drilled regardless of where the well bore or surface location may be.

so, my takeaway from your explanation is that a well's numerical nomenclature with respect to section(s) describes drainage area but, not necessarily that well's surface location.

A well name in the case of a horizontal well indicates the section or sections being produced (location of the perforated wellbore), not the surface location. The surface location can be within the section/unit (as with HA RA SU58;HALL-WILLIAMS 4-34H #1) or outside ( as with HA RA SU55;COMEGYS 35-3 H #1. You have to look at the SONRIS Lite Well File or the SONRIS Classic Well File to find the surface location.
