For the ones that remember .....I was talking with someone the other day and we brought up the topic of hamels park. I know it shut down a long time ago, but I never really knew why? Didnt know if it was problems or just something else. Anyone that remembers and has any info on Hamels, it would be appreciated.

since Shreveport is on the shale, seems like a practial place to place muti-drilling pads .
Hey Like That Ray!!! Place alot of them!!! 1 in each corner!!! Half of dozen in the center!!!
The park was a money pit with detrieriating rides. Maintenace and declining attendance killed the park
I believe a church owns it now. It still has all the orginal buildings up.
The surface is ethier leased or owned by a church. They hold sevices in the old kiddie barn. I would bet my last quarter that the minerals are still owned by the Hamels.
Not to worry KB. Pastor Mark Briggs is rescuing the lost souls and herding his sheep!
I for one wish Hamel's was still around. Here is some interesting info about Mr. Charles Hamel. He had a pet elephant called Lady Lemah (Hamels spelled backwards) that used to play in the lake behind Hamel's and drink out of the soda fountain at his house. When Mr. Hamel died the elephant died several weeks later. He also had two chimps, Buddy and Suzie that lived with the family. The Marie and Charles Hamel Park was given in their honor in the place that friends and family used to take hay rides. Mr. Hamel loved to children, valued family and was a friend to the community; a great American indeed.
Did it have something to do with the fatality of that young girl leaving the park, I seem to remember the park closing not long after the settelment?
I don't know if it had to do with the accident, but I know the family who's daughter was killed and son terribly injuried. He died later from his injuries. But they did get a large settlement. That entrance/exit had been a terrible danger for years and there had been many accident, just none as bad as that one.
Earl, your showing your age if you can remember the old hamels dairy. I missed out on the hamels dairy, but we used to go down to a dairy on sligo road, I too miss that real milk with just a touch of cream floating on top!
Hey Earl, I miss the old time beer like it was when I was a kid. "Hello mello Jacks little darlin, your the beer for me, hello mello Jacks they say right across the USA, your the beer for me yessiree".
Two Dogs,
As old and ugly as I am, I don't remember that one and I don't forget a good jingle!
