The Curious Case of SAMSON CONTOUR

Recently several members have asked me about Samson Contour. I originally ran across SC while researching my blog post on the history of the Haynesville Shale. The first recorded Haynesville application that is in the core area of the play, and therefore shale as opposed to sand, was filed by SC on January 9, 2007 for 3 Drilling & Production Units in the Martin Field, Red River Parish. That application hearing was "Not Held". I see no other SC unit activity related to the Haynesville Shale until Sept. 30, 2008, twenty months later. Fourteen months after other operators had begun applying for HA units.

Since Sept. 30, 2008, Samson Contour has applied for HA unit designation covering 69 sections scattered over the play. It would seem they are making up for lost time. The question on the minds of many landowners and GHS members is one of capability. Technical and financial. Does SC really plan to be the operator in these units? Or is this unit application process an attempt to lure a larger, more capable join venture partner(s).

If you will excuse the amateurish cut and past job and hand written notes which follow in the attachment, review some of the information on SC that is available on SONRIS. The top portion of the list are wells by SC since Nov. 2007. There are fifteen total. I have noted three as status code 03 (Permit Expired), one as status code 18 (Temporarily Abandoned Well) and one as code 29 (Dry & Plugged). Of the remaining ten, three are not within the bounds of the Haynesville Shale prospective area. Of the seven left, five are permits though probably drilling and two are completed and producing wells. Samson Contour has one producing Haynesville vertical well and zero completed horizontal Haynesville wells.

I invite the members to join in a little group research project to find out more about Samson Contour. The parent company is Samson Energy and a division, Samson Lonestar, is active in the E. TX. portion of the play.

J.A. On-line short-hand for, "In MY Opinion". Sometimes written, IMHO. In my humble opinion. We also use HA And HS interchangeably for the Haynesville Shale formation. The LA. Office of Conservation uses the abbreviation "HA" in their documents. And HA is often followed in unit and well reports by "RA", "RB, or "RC". Those are Reservoirs A, B & C. You will run across quite a few abbreviations on the site. There are some I don't understand so don't feel lonesome. LOL! You'll that one a lot. Laugh Out Loud. Regards, Skip

Skip nailed it. I've had CHK in my stuff in SE Oklahoma and that's their MO. They'll have a tiinee weenie WI just fot the science.

Twin Cities called me back with the SOS, $1500 / 25% or $2000 / 22 1/2% per acre. I told him once again, only call me if you plan to raise the offer. He said " we plan on lowering the offer", so I relied, call me when you plan to raise the offer!

Jay Murrell & Jim Krow (also other interested members). Samson Contour's leasehold in the Caddo-Pine Island, Longwood and Greenwood-Waskom fields is not legacy. It was acquired through leases taken 2006 through 2008. SC's unit orders for those three fields total 29 sections and Samson has been scrambling to extend the 2006 leases as they were three year terms with no extension clauses. As development has slowed and landowners are by now fully aware of the HS play, further extensions may be harder to come by. And the clock is ticking on a significant lease block in an area (Caddo Pine Island & Longwood) where the first wells have disappointed. SC applying for unit orders is not unusual or surprising (it does not hold leases) but how in the world will they get this significant leasehold drilled in the relatively short time frame facing them? Judging by well permit applications, they do not seem to be in too much of a hurry. From the first of this year until yesterday, they have zero well permit applications.

Skip, you will be pleased to know that your favorite company, Samson Contour, has actually permitted a well effective today, March 12. It is in T14N/R9W, Section 30. Doesn't mean they will actually drill it but, BY GOLLY, it's permitted! You must have embarassed them into permitting this well.

SB. If I have to embarrass a company on GHS before they get off their duff and start drilling their leases, there will a lot of expired leases out there this year. Just too many to get around to in a timely fashion. LOL! The well you mention, if actually drilled, will hold one of the five units in the Bracky Branch Field. One unit down and 57 more to go. Tracking Samson's drilling program is as exciting as watching paint dry. Of course, the landowners in that section may be happy to see a rig. Good Luck to them. And to Samson.
