Houston Chron story

"Local energy workers jammed a downtown Houston theater today to protest climate change legislation that the U.S. Senate will take up in the coming weeks.

The Energy Citizens rally, promoted by some major energy companies and business organizations as well as the Greater Houston Partnership, is the first of several such events planned in 19 states in the coming weeks.

About 3,500 people, or 1,500 more than expected, filed into the facility, many donning yellow T-shirts that were being handed out that read 'I'm an energy citizen.' Houston Astros owner Drayton McLane Jr. was the keynote speaker."

Any first-hand report out there?

Big group of friends from a major oil co. attended and said it was great. Unfortunately, those in power will denigrate those attending, call them un-American and anti-planet, right wing nuts, whatever, and then ignore them completely while they go off and pass their massive tax bill they call energy legislation...all the while ignoring the number one form of U.S.-made energy...natural gas!

Defeating this bill in the Senate is what the organizers are going for here. Its going to be a tough road but I think if enough people rise up against the Democratic Machine, we have a chance. Guys like Drayton McLane, who owns a heck of a lot more than the Astro's, is a great guy and down to earth as they come, yet still has millions of dollars in the bank! If you want natural gas in the energy legislation, better start working over those Senators with letters, phone calls and tough, loud questions at their town halls during the break. Here in Texas both of our Senators are pretty much in line with us so we don't have much work to do. In La., you guys may have one of those all important swing votes. Ms Blanco will hopefully look at her constituents' concerns and jobs and decide to vote against the bill in current form. But you better push on her hard! She is known to cave to the Party directives...particularly when Rahm gets out his blackjack and starts knee capping folks!
I'm sure you meant to say Ms. Landrieu?
Whoops. You are right.
Yes - I was there. It was a room full of people with a common objective of stopping Cap & Tax before it's too late and becomes law. Interestingly, one of the three speakers was Sylvia Murillo, the president (female) of the Houston Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (didn't know they had one of those, but anyway...) who proceeded to tell the crowd that her group was growing all the time, would soon be the largest such group in the US, and that they appreciated having been invited to the discussion -- but that they "didn't have an official position" on Cap & Tax at this time. I suppose she's waiting to see whichever party offers them the most in treasure and tribute before committing. That's the Democratic (party) spirit that made this country what it is today (sadly).

I have to say that the rally more resembled a Presbyterian church social than an emotional get-out-the-vote inspirational event. All those middle- and upper middle-class faces in the audience, most of whom were bussed in by Houston oil companies, weren't about to do or say anything that would get them or their companies into the newspapers. Everyone kept their seats, applauded the speakers politely, and then quietly fanned out to board their buses when the speakers were done. After attending this tepid event, I hope this isn't the best we can do to inspire people. We need to light a fire under the thoroughly uneducated American electorate before this fabricated tax scheme is rammed down our throats (or up somewhere else) by the Senate in September. After the health insurance fight, however, I don't know how many more town-hall meetings anyone is going to want to attend. People may just be tired of fighting the inevitable socialist soaking that we're all about to undergo.
