Educating your grandchildren is the best way to show your love........ we have twelve! But how about finding someone outside of your family who might not have the resources to send their children to college, and helping them as well. That's what we have done! The State of Louisiana has a great college education savings program, where you can set up an investment account for any student who plans to attend a Louisiana college or University. From what I've learned, the State will match a certain percentage of contributions, and all interest on the account is non-taxable as long as the funds are used for higher education at a school in Louisiana.

Well, I've not made anything yet; however, should I make something....my charity will be at home first as I have a son who has been in the military for almost 6 years and was not able to go ahead and get his college education while he was in. He has been in Iraq 2 times, Kuwait 1 time, and is coming home from Korea as I write this.
Thanks to God for keeping him safe these last 6 years....he had some really close calls. Military pay is not that good so I intend to leave a "Windfall" for him as an offer of my gratitude for his service to our country while still a very young man (18 when he went in) and his sister (who helped me keep my sanity while her brother has been gone). I do help various charities out; but I guess I'll be somewhat selfish and let it be a surprise for my children from me when I'm no longer around.

Great, little ole 1st grade teacher. I agree it is good to help your children, if they are prepared to appreciate /use it approprietly and not squander it.
Leaving a 'surprise" like that sounds like a pretty cool thing to do!

I agree with my children being prepared to appreciate/use it approprietly and not squander it away.....I believe that they have developed this appreciation as both my son and daughter were required to work in order to get a car while in high school. My husband and I have always tried to instill in them that they need to work and that nothing will be "handed" to them. They were life guards, worked at ACe Hardware (yes, my daughter worked at an Ace Hardware while in high school and while in college --
6 years total), worked at restaurants, etc. I feel that they have good work ethics and are pretty well prepared for whatever life throws at them. I certainly wish and hope that things will turn out to be profitable for me so that I can leave them something as the land is land that their grandfather and grandmother owned and has been passed down. Neither my daughter nor my son were blessed to have known either one of them. They know nothing about this venture and will not until they find it listed in my will. Yes, they do know about the land but nothing else.

Little ole 1st grade teacher,

Please let your son know how much we all appreciate his service to our country. And I for one don't think it's selfish to want to help your children, and grandchildren. I've already shared my "windfall" with my family, and when I'm gone, my children will inherit the ongoing royalties.

Yes, I certainly will let him know. He arrived around 10:00 p.m. and saw his 10 month old daughter for the 2nd time since she was born. He missed her birth (he was in Korea). He did get to come in last March and was with her for 1 month. When he arrived tonight, his first comment was .... "Oh, she has gotten so big". Luckily, for the past 8 months, he has been able to see her on Skype....she actually recognized him and recognized his voice tonight. What a blessing this was. She was crying right before he came up to us, but as soon as she saw him and he talked to her she stopped.
Again, thank you for your appreciating his service to our country and to our freedom.

I have been rescuing animals for years, but I also give to local animal rescues like Animal Welfare in Shreveport. (I am not a member, so not soliciting donations). I like local charities especially when the workers are all volunteers and DO NOT GET A PAY CK. FROM THE DONATIONS. When our ship comes in, I will give a lot more. Seems like the more money I give away, the more success comes my way. Karma

I too am an animal lover. Did you see the picture of my kittycat on my profile? She's a stray that I adopted about a year ago. One day she just showed up at my daughter's house on Firetower Road, north of Grand Cane. My granddaughter brought her to me, and I immediately fell in love........ Her name is Shiraz..... but I call her "Razie" for short.

Last Christmas I saw a woman waiting at a bus stop with 3 kids , it was cold, raining, and just miserable. I parked nearby, walked up to her and handed her a wad of cash and said merry Christmas, and walked away. We also like to hit whatever eating spots are open on Christmas eve and leave a hefty tip for the poor souls that have to work.

You will certainly be Blessed for helping others...... I did the same thing for a young mother a few years aog who was working the night shift at Walmart just to be able to buy food for Thanksgiving. I slipped her a hundred dollar bill while I was checking out...... she cried, and so did I. ........ I returned to the store the following week, and she was still there, so I purchased a bunch of Christmas presents for her two small children. I left the gifts with the store manager, and requested that they tell her the gifts were from Santa Claus.............. The Blessing I received was awsome!

Coooooooooooooool Willbilly and Linda,
This is the kind of good stuff I love to hear of! Jack thinks his Chrsitmas present to himself this year will be five hundred dollar bills to slip strangers who look to be in need.
Jack didn't have the extra jack to do this kind of stuff prior to the HS.
