Anybody have any knowledge about the Smackover Formation in West Central Mississippi?

There is word that land men are seeking out leases in the Lower Delta area of Sharkey and Issaquena Counties.  These two counties are approximately 30 miles due West of the old Tinsley Field, lie on the Eastern edge of the Monroe Uplift, and approximately 1/2 way between Delhi, LA and Tinsley, MS.

I haven't been able to come up with much information on the subject and mineral rights owners in the area aren't familiar with land men.

There were some wells drilled in the area in the late 40's and early 50's with most appearing to be plugged according to the State OGB.  Looking at the old permits it appears none ever exceeded 4500 feet in depth.

Would be interesting if others familiar with the area would post their findings.

Have you heard who is doing the leasing?

Just the name of the Land Man. I have heard they are working to get leases all over Sharkey, Issaquena, and into Yazoo County.  That's about all I know.
See my post under tuscaloosa shale. Ieased 300 mineral acres to a dummy corp. Rights are in issaquena county near the river. Told target was tuscaloosa sands at 12000 feet. see devon announcement yesterday, could be operator. Bill Morrison
Bill, I don't believe that is Tusc. that they are looking at. Its probably Smackover. Just a guess on my part. Some land men are told to tell the mineral owners anything but the true objective so they can get the leases as cheaply as possible. Just my opinion.
I hold no illusions about the accuracy of what I was told.
Glad to lease at any price. Could not find any producing wells notrth of Jackson. 1997 study indicates sands under river bed couLd have oil, also Mainland Resources deep well puportedly showed oil in Tuscaloosa sands. hope springs eternal. Prior leases in 1940s.
If the dummy corp is Lunar Resources they are after a deep oil trend, and are active from West Carroll Parish east...I'm told they have an office in Lake Providence, LA now which is right across from Issaquena

It is Solar Resources in Sharkey and Issaquena - must be the same biggie behind it if you play close attention to the similarities of the entity names.  They show up in the Rolling Fork phone book with a physical address the same as a local attorney.  In the Secretary of State registry they are listed as a Laurel, MS entiry with a Madison, MS agent that is associated with a company of landmen.

The dummy is solar. Resources. I thought operaator might
Be EOG Resources because land man had earlier relationship with EOG. Who knows?
EOG annual report shows northern miss as an area of operations, but no wells.
