City urges switch to natural gas water heaters

The city of Thomson is offering free natural gas water heaters to qualifying residents during September and October.

Thomson has joined seven other cities in east Georgia to create the Great Water Heater Round Up. In addition to a free water heater, the city is offering a $450 rebate toward the purchase and installation of a natural gas tankless water heater. Natural gas tankless water heating is one of the more efficient ways to heat water.

A federal tax credit is also available to those who have natural gas tankless water heaters installed in their homes.

"The city of Thomson cares about its citizens and wants to do what we can to make our homes and places of business energy efficient, comfortable and enjoyable places to be," said Chuck Cason, city of Thomson gas superintendent. "The East Georgia Great Water Heater Roundup is a great opportunity for citizens to replace their old natural gas tank water heaters or switch out their electric or propane water heaters to natural gas."

The East Georgia Great Water Heater Roundup is a partnership of local governments in east Georgia, water heater manufacturers, local contractors and local businesses to help consumers understand the advantages of natural gas water heating.

In these 60 days, special rebates, offers and events will be available to consumers to help with the purchase and installation of a natural gas water heater. The East Georgia Great Water Heater Roundup is the best time to begin enjoying the benefits.

In addition, because natural gas is environmentally friendly, a natural gas water heater has less greenhouse gas emissions than an electric water heater. An electric water heater uses electricity that's generated at a central plant with coal, nuclear energy and even natural gas. The electricity is then delivered to your home or business very inefficiently. When you choose natural gas, you're making a choice to lower your energy costs, use energy efficiently, and be a good steward of the environment.
