does anyone know why encana would lease my land under the name of charleston engery? also, are they going to drill deep wells here? we had a shallow well for several years from the wilcox sands. frank spooner drilled those.

So you and others wouldn't know that Encana was interested in your area. I haven't heard of them drilling shallow wells so far. What Section, Township and Range are you located?
samson and mark IV are drilling shallow wells at riverton and north of there. i don't know all that off the top of my head and don't fell like getting up. it's off of buckskin rd.
In answer to your original question, probably to keep the price per below $500 (more like $150) and to keep the percentage interest below 1/5.
Well, I know Encana has some acreage in Caldwell, some wells were scouted for them a while back. Nothing firm yet as to when they want to drill though. And yeah, not shallow.
well # 230834
This is a 16,000ft Devon well which is located very close to the Caldwell line in Ouachita parish. Must of been virgin formations :) Anyway, I tried to look at the logs but for some reason the bottom part was blacked out. It might just be my computer. I would appreciate it if someone else could take a look at the log and tell me what they think.
North LA:

Anadarko drilled 4 wells in Caldwell parish in 2005. All of these wells were located west of the Ouachita River in T14N-2E and T14N-R3E. All were drilled as unit wells for the Cotton Valley formation. 2 of these wells were dry holes and the other 2 were marginal producers. The deepest of the marginal wells was drilled to a depth 0f 17,055'. While I have not personally looked at the logs for any of these wells, I have been told by people who have had a chance to look at the logs and who have looked at core samples that the Haynesville Shale was not prevalent at these depths. With the knowledge that Anadarko has in house already, you can believe that they would have been out here a long time ago acquiring leases for the Haynesville if they believed that it existed in Caldwell Parish.

I do know that Clayton Williams is currently drilling a well in Richland Parish just across the Boeuf River from Caldwell Parish. This well is permitted for a depth of 18,000 feet. A consultant engineer friend of mine who is doing some work for this well told me that Clayton Williams is targeting the Cotton Valley formation. For what it is worth, he also told me that the technical team for Clayton Williams does not believe that the Haynesville shale extends this east and that if it was determined to be this far east, it would be at a depth of 21,000 feet. If this is indeed true, I don't think that you will see any wells going horizontal at a depth of 21,000 feet. Current technology cannot drill at horizontal well at this depth. But with the way technology is constantly evolving, it migh be possible to drill a horizontal well at this depth in a few years.

Encana has been a player in the convential plays way before the Haynesville came along. More than likely, if Charleston Energy is buying leases on their behalf, it would be for a play like the Hosston or Cotton Valley.
Thanks for the information Mr. Sparks. This well was in southwestern Ouachita and was drilled by Devon. You know anything about this specific well? I've been keeping up with the Clayton Willaims well in Richland parish and from what I understand it is targeting the Bossier sands. I know that some geological sources show the bossier as part of the cotton valley group so I guess it's just a matter of how you see it. The bossier sands in East Texas (see amarosa field) have been monster wells with some producing 50+mmcfd so I'm hopeful the CW well will be just as good. I guess we'll see.

Speaking of Anadarko, I wonder why they aren't in this play?
I don't think it matters if it's Haynesville shale as long as it has hydrocarbons. It could be the Smackover, Bossier sands, Bossier shale, Buckner, Lower Cotton Valley, Louark, Norphlet, James estate, Dorcheat, Shongaloo, Millerton, Louann salt, it doesn't matter as long as it's a resource rock they can get to and drill/produce from. If it's a source rock then they should be able to get production where ever they poke a hole in the ground.

BTW this is my source for the following formations

Yeah you're right. In most locations it's too deep anyway.
My siblings and myself inherited some undivided interest in some acreage in Section 2 of T12N-R3E in Caldwell Parish. Our property is located just south of where Charleston Energy is apparently leasing. They leased our cousin who has property in T13N-R3E just to the north of ours but nobody in our area has been approached about a lease. The Charleston landman who leased our cousin was a young lady and she told our cousin that they were leasing for deep Cotton Valley. She showed our cousin a copy of a letter that her company had written to a local attorney in Columbia in which Charleston stated that they were not leasing for the Haynesville Shale and that they did not believe that the Haynesville was located in Caldwell Parish. The letter also said her company believed that even if the Haynesville was in Caldwell Parish, it would be at a depth of around 22,000 feet.

My late father had leased our acreage to Anadarko in December of 2005 and the lease expires in December of this year. My siblings and I feel the same way that North LA does. We don't care what formation they are targeting, we just want them to drill and get some production. I know that my father was dissapointed that after Anadarko drilled their dry holes, they just picked up and left. My father told us that there has been a lot of shallow production in Caldwell but nobody has ever had any luck with the deep stuff. We just hope that Charleston or whoever come knocking on our door soon because we will surely listen to whatever they have to say. My siblings and I have decided that we won't give it away for free but we won't be greedy either. We just want some holes punched in the ground and get those royalty checks coming to our mailboxes.

The Lithium Connection to Shale Drilling

Shale drilling and lithium extraction are seemingly distinct activities, but there is a growing connection between the two as the world moves towards cleaner energy solutions. While shale drilling primarily targets…
