What is the address listing for Merit or Meritt? If Dallas, it is possibly Merit Energy which is a reasonably good-sized independent with a good reputation.

Mattie. The Merit Energy addresses are in Shreveport and Houston.

My guess is that it is the Dallas group mentioned above. I believe they have a Houston office, and may have added a Shreveport office after the HS discovery.

They are well-funded by institutional investors, very conservative, and to my knowledge, always have been a straight-shooting company. They've been around for at least 20 years. Unless they've divested heavily in the last 12-18 months, I would suspect that they are a $1billion+ asset based company. Old EDS money from Dallas with an original group of long-time geologists, engineers, and legal expertise.

Lafayette is the landman and land company capital of, not only Louisiana but to a great extent, the Gulf coast. In all the NW. LA. Clerk of Court record rooms that I have worked in, I would venture a guess that 50% plus of those present are from Lafayette. In some cases, 80% plus. Houston would be a close second but it's easier to get experienced landmen out of Lafayette because of proximity and I-49. I recently spent the day in Mansfield in the Clerk's record room. Whenever I couldn't find the conveyance book I was looking for a nice lady at the end of that row of shelves would say, " you're looking for such and such, aren't you?" She was right every time and would say, "it's right over there, bottom shelf" And it was. I thanked her every time and finally asked how long she had been working in this particular record room. She said I have been standing right here Monday through Friday each week for the last 8 months. You will never here the words "excuse me" uttered more often than you will in a record room full of landmen.

An acquaintance with property in section 30, 9N, 12W, said that he recently had two surveyors ask his permission to go on that property to do some work. He asked why... they said that they were working for Encana and needed access to the property to determine the four corners of section 30. Why would this be required? i.e what's going on? Anyone else is free to chime in on this ----

Martin. Survey work precedes development (roads, pipelines, well pads, etc.). An exact surface location is required for each well and that is the first entry that you will see on a well file on SONRIS Lite. It looks like this:

12/24/2008 01 16696 200' FSL & 1270' FWL OF SEC 13. PBHL: 250' FNL & 1040' FWL OF SEC 13.

This well is permitted to 16,696' with a surface location that is 200' FSL (From The South Line) and 1270' FWL (From the West Line) of Section 13. The PBHL (Planned Bottom Hole Location) is 250' FNL (From the North line) & 1040' FWL (From The West Line) of Section 13.

Road/pipeline makes sense -- section 31 was unitized some time back. Still getting reports of low ball lease offers for 3x and adjacent sections. Thanks for the answer.
