Seal Beach-based Clean Energy Fuels next month will begin design and construction work on four new compressed-natural-gas stations for Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART), among other work. The $40 million development contract is part of the Dallas agency's efforts to move its fixed-route and paratransit bus fleet to full CNG power.

DART operates buses on 135 fixed and express routes throughout the greater Dallas area. Over the next three years, the agency hopes to replace its current liquefied-natural-gas and diesel-powered fleet with more than 450 new CNG buses and 200 paratransit vehicles.

The new Clean Energy stations, which will be located at DART's bus and paratransit maintenance facilities, are expected to support the transition. The first new fueling plant is slated for completion by April of next year.

"With the transition of its bus fleet to CNG power, DART joins the ranks of clear leaders among U.S. transit operators anxious to secure the environmental and economic benefits of CNG for their communities," said James Harger, chief marketing officer for Clean Energy.

The natural-gas-fuel provider powers more than 21,200 vehicles at 224 locations in the U.S. and Canada; the company works with clients in the refuse, transit, trucking, shuttle, taxi, airport and municipal fleet markets. In recent months, Clean Energy has secured contracts with the Metropolitan Tulsa Transit Authority, Dillon Transport and UPS, among others.

"Across the nation, Clean Energy is partnering with many transit agencies to reliably fuel more than 5,500 buses daily," said Harger. "We are honored by the opportunity DART has given us to develop the new station infrastructure that will support one of America’s largest CNG transit bus fleets."
