Drilling depths?

I've been reading all I can on leases, hoping when my time comes I'll have the info I need. I've noticed owners are putting the depths in their leases. Do you lease XXX feet down for one amount and the next XXX feet for another? How far do you go? What are the standard depths that companies are accepting?
