T. Boone Pickens is keynote speaker at Chatham event

Texas oil executive and alternative energy proponent T. Boone Pickens will visit northeastern Louisiana next week to view a new fleet of natural gas-burning vehicles developed by a local gas resources company.

EXCO Resources, which operates several hundred natural gas wells in the region as well as a natural gas vehicle fueling facility in Chatham, is scheduled to unveil its first compressed natural gas vehicle at an event on May 8.

Pickens, founder of BP Capital Management and EXCO board member, is scheduled to attend and serve as keynote speaker for the event.

“Basically, we’re converting our fleet of trucks to compressed natural gas,” said Ken Filardo, production superintendent for EXCO Resources in Chatham. “We’ve got about 50 vehicles we’re going to convert. We ran the numbers against the price of gasoline and found we could save quite a bit of money by using a very clean burning fuel.”

The event will be held from 11:15 a.m. to 1 p.m. at EXCO’s fueling facility at 448 Ramsey Hill Road near Chatham.

Last July, Pickens launched a $58 million national advertising campaign to promote The Pickens Plan, an energy policy aimed at reducing the American dependence on foreign oil.

One of four points in Pickens’ plan calls for the use of natural gas-burning vehicles to replace gasoline as a way to lower the country’s need for foreign oil.

The other points in the plan call for generating up to 22 percent of the country’s electricity through wind power; building a 21st Century electrical grid; and providing residential and commercial building owners incentives to upgrade their insulation and other energy options.

Louisiana Department of Natural Resources Secretary Scott Angelle has also been invited to attend the event, which is not open to the public.

“What we are unveiling is going to tie in to what he’s going to talk about,” Filardo said. “We’re very excited about being able to do this to show how easy it is to do and how cost effective it is.”

"natural gas-burning vehicles developed by a local gas resources company."

What company is this? Is Boone about to take this thing by the horns? I wish he would turn north LA into a CNG Mecca. What an example he could make if he used this issue to turn the most depressed area in the US to the richest using CNG. Well I may be dreaming a bit but it would be an interesting plan.
Buck,
You are one good news hound !! Keep sniffing out those stories. Anytime I see your name on a post, I know it's something I'll be interested in.
I second that. If I see your name on a post I read it every time.
Thanks for more good info! Hope the word spreads and other companies follow. The O&G and related companies have alot of trucks running the roads.
Thanks again for good news Buck. Hopefully this will spread faster now that more are trying it.
Thanks, buck. The ng fleets are increasing in the US, although still small in numbers compared to the 8 million wordwide. (120K in the US would only be about 2% of the total, given those numbers.) Little by little ... maybe New York City cab drivers will get behind this, too. Now there's a fleet! lol

That would then make a convincing argument for converting and/or producing more ng personal vehicles.

Have a great day, buck - sesport :0)
Buck...
I've been to Seattle several times in the past 12 months. Just about all the cabs run on natural gas. Not sure about the mass transit system. i think i saw a few busses on cng. It's coming. Hopefully we can last. jhh
