I have read that Sabine County may hold multiple pay zones. Could this situation extend the life of some of the high volume results that companies are having (in other counties)or is it totally unrelated? Also I read in a GCAGS article that there may be large amounts of gas surrounding the geological formation known as the Sabine Island but at considerable depths. As this was written in 2001, that may be the target but I can't find what this may be called and if it is sand or shale? Any help would be appreciated.

Not related to the shale.
Sabine island iwas too shallow to be part of the shale...

...or so I am told..
This is the quote from the paper. "In Texas, a broad area South of Panola County overlying the Sabine Arch and Sabine Island areas was either exposed or only covered by shallow water during the Haynesville. This transgressed shelf. perhaps in conjunction with a Taylor lowstand episode, could result in either extensions of the Taylor sandstone into the area, or reestablishment of pinnacle reefs in the distal parts of the transgressed shelf. Such carbonates around the Sabine Island will be found at considerable depth." I thought the Taylor were sands that produced very well further West than the area in question? Could they target these sands in this area also?
Jim, I always appreciate your knowledge on this site. The Carthage field is where Devon had big results reported recently. Could this explain their interest in the area discussed in the article outside of the shale (around Sabine Island). Maybe they are targeting that same formation only it's deeper. I am a complete rookie at all this but I am trying to place the targets in E Texas outside of the shale to better understand the motivations and especially the economics of the decisions made by the companies doing all the work on the ground. Your thoughts on the possible target?
Funny...I've been noticing some deep permit applications in Panola County Texas. We're talking 18,000-20,000 foot wells. I'm wondering what's down there.
On the web site oilvoice.com there are some comments regarding Sabine and San Augustine Counties being the "motherload" of the Haynesville shale. They go on to talk abount depth etc., issues of which I have no knowledge. Has anyone read this and are we talking about the same issues here? [i.e. Devon's lime or sand wells; 20mmcf plus a day on vertical with potential 2 or 5 times on horizontal]
Please tell me in relation to some town or highway where Sabine Island is located. Is it in Sabine County? Isn't Devon active in leasing around the San Augustine and Sabine county lines? Also, around Geneva and Milam?
I have been watching the permits in Sabine county but have not seen any great depths permitted.
Carl, which deep wells in Panola county are you referring to? Thanks everyone for addressing the questions.
It seems like XTO is pulling all these really deep permits in Panola County. I'm just confused seeing these permits for 19,000' horizontal wells. You'd think this would be below the bossier shale. I'm wondering if XTO knows something nobody else knows.
CL, Devon has leased in those areas. Also, according to the map that I looked at Sabine island is a formation that covers parts of SA, Sabine Counties, and parts of Sabine Parish.
Carl and Alongview,
XTO just permitted, I believe in December, a !5,500 horizontal in Shelby County, the O'dell survey, #A-534. My Shelby County map does not have acreage on it to determine miles but it looks like this permit is maybe 2 miles north of the SA county line just above Blandlake...[northeast side of SA County.] Correct me if someone can give me a more definite location.
Alongview, On your map.. What part of San Augustine is covered by Sabine Island?
Is Blandlake and east of Blandlake, in San Augustine county the area covered in Sabine Island?
Thanks
I am not in town to look at the map til after the weekend. I will see if I can scan it and post it on my place on Monday. I will let you all know when it is posted.
Thanks Alongview,
I look forward to seeing the map.
Jim Krow:
Jim,
Please explain in what counties and areas of the counties the Oak Hill and Blocker fields exist.
