Odorless Gas Line Breaks South of Shreveport

This could have been bad.

From the Shreveport Times:

A gas line apparently nicked by workers last week erupted today, causing brief traffic delays but no injuries, parish fire officials say.

Caddo Fire District 5 personnel in a nearby station heard the eruption just before 10 a.m. and the sound that reminded some of a jet got louder and louder. The gas, which was raw and did not yet have artificial odor added, did not catch fire, officials said.

The 5-inch, high-pressure gas line blew out just just south of Flournoy-Lucas Road on state Highway 1, yards west of a railway line, District 5 Chief Grayson Boucher said.

He said a contractor digging sewer lines last week may have nicked the line, leading to today's rupture.

Officials quickly shut off the line, and Caddo sheriff's deputies briefly blocked traffic in both directions on state Highway 1.

It probally didn't leak for a week, the line was probally just damaged by the contractor. Even without the smell there would be odvious indications that the line was breeched if it was under high pressure. The weakend line would be under stress untill it blew out.

Two and a half - three hours earlier and it would have caught a lot of early morning work traffic, including a few school buses. There's also a small neighborhood nearby. Been watching the work and wondering when something like that would happen.
