Pipeline pranksters prompt gorilla sighting

And there really was a gorilla – albeit a person in a gorilla suit.

The incident turned out to be a prank, but it created some laughs for deputies and the instigators. Not so much, though, for the intended victim.

It all started less than an hour ago when the DeSoto sheriff’s dispatch office received a call from a man who reported seeing a gorilla run across a pipeline crossing on state Highway 175. Numerous pipelines are being installed across the parish to carry natural gas from the Haynesville Shale, putting hundreds of pipeline workers in the area.

Two deputies were dispatched to check out the complaint. Within minutes, they found the gorilla.

“It was a guy dressed in a suit,” Sgt. Stephanie White said.

Apparently, the pipeline workers wanted to play a prank on a coworker whom they described as easily scared. “No, he didn’t think it was funny,” White said.

Case closed.
