Petrohawk was acquired by an arm of the Australian mining conglomerate BHP Billiton in July 2011.  It is one of their first forays into the onshore oil and gas sector in the United States. You might want to try calling their Houston offices to see if anyone there can direct you to the right person. I know BHP  lacks familiarity with U.S. mineral ownership laws. In most countries where it operates the state owns all mineral rights, no matter where they are.

I've heard you can put a lien on their wells, other assets and any production that comes out the ground tying up all their profit. This may be oilfield legend but I've heard that it normally resolves small problems rather quickly.

Yeah, I know a small business owner that was owed 4 of 5 thoussand dollars for work that he performed on offshore wells. The oil company was playing games with him until he had a lien placed on those particular producing wells.

 

They paid up fairly quickly after that (from what he said).
