Question regarding property with mineral rights and wells without a lease

I just found out that there is a company who is drilling on land that we have mineral rights without a lease. Can anyone tell me possible implications, outcomes? I'm looking for realistic speculation.

Skip, my brothers and I own land in Red River parish.  I discovered that a gas well was drilled and approximately six (6) acres with minerals is in production.  We were never offered a lease prior to production.  We requested production reports, but do not have a lease.  Is this normal to drill and start production and make no offer to lease?  

This is not an uncommon circumstance.  There are several possible explanations. What was the response to your request for production reports?  If there is no clear documentation of ownership in the public records of Red River Parish for you or your predecessor in title that could be the reason.
