CHK (et al) is out there doing their thing (activity abuz) --an' I'm still here doing my thing (nothing!}.  I'm STILL an UMI and plan to stay that way.  I simply am NOT going to sign away 75% of my minerals ( on a 25% lease with no surface protections) for peanuts.  I've talked to several people who have signed and all have said they regret it for one reason or another.  Since the summer of '08 I've researched and learned a whole lot.  Who knows what the future holds, but as that ole' sage once said ". . . it aint over till it's over . . . ".  An' folks, believe me, it aint over here in the Haynesville ! !  Wait till 2013 and after that.   It will be very interesting.

lanadan,

Great to hear from you after a long while.  Yes, many people out there regret signing with CHK.  And many who didn't sign with CHK, but signed with another company, have been disappointed with CHK as their operator.  CHK  is not making landowners happy.  You chose your path of UMO, and let's hope you are able to reap the benefits one day.  There is still along way to go....

Thanks Henry for your thoughts.  There is one very important point  that I think a lot of folks miss out on.  That is, that mineral rights TRUMP  surface rights ! Period.  Without proper surface (use) rights in place, the poor landowner is basically at the mercy  of Big Oil/Gas.  They can come on your property and do dang well what they want to (with certain legal restrictions, of course) and the landowner has no recourse.  Not that I am agin  signing a proper lease (and this word is a misnomer too).  Not at all. BUT -- the landowner better beware !  I/we do not expect to reap mega-bucks in our lifetime.   However I/we have put in place legally (trust fund, etc) so that our children/grandchildren/posterity will not be taken advantage of.  No, shale gas is not a "blip on the radar screen" so to speak.  Things in the energy arena are indeed changing and natural gas WILL be a big player in the future.  Be patient and wait and see.  The "fat lady" hasn't sung yet !
