Solution shifts drillers' demand for water
By Vickie Welborn • vwelborn@gannett.com • July 24, 2009

Continuing efforts to shift oil and natural gas operators from groundwater to surface water sources during the shale fracturing process got a boost Thursday.

Rule changes

Proposed rule changes that would let Haynesville Shale operators reuse exploration and production wastewater should be firmed up before becoming final by the end of the year.
Following are highlights of the proposed limitations.
# Wastewater only can be used for hydraulic fracturing in the Haynesville Shale natural gas formation.
# Wastewater only can be used by the same operator of record.
# Wastewater only can be used to complete hydraulic fracturing operations on one well before being disposed of.
# All waste generated in the processing of the wastewater for fracturing fluid must be properly disposed of.
# The surface owner must register no objection against the well site receiving the wastewater.
