Gene Eddy, the director of Sportran, which serves as Shreveport-Bossier City’s mass transit system, unveiled the first five CNG buses Wednesday in front of Shreveport’s Riverview Theater in SporTran’s quest to convert its entire fleet to CNG. Following the press conference, attendees were allowed to take a ride on one of the buses.

Mayor Cedric Glover and the Shreveport City Council approved SporTran’s transition to CNG in 2009.
The city council also approved a federal grant application that paid $2.2 million for the buses, $1.2 million for the fuel station and $335,000 for SporTran facility changes needed to operate CNG vehicles.

Eddy said they plan to have their entire fleet of 46 buses converted by 2020.
